So remember the other day, how Joss Whedon said that Avengers: Age of Ultron would introduce characters we hadn’t seen on-screen before, and I said that it might not be Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel because Marvel probably haven’t cast her yet seeing as how her solo movie is only coming out in 2018? Yeah, about that…
At its core, this rumour is of course nothing particularly new, seeing as Badass Digest already reported last year that an early draft of the Age of Ultron script ended with Captain Marvel showing up in the end. But since then, the script had apparently changed. And now it’s apparently changed right back if Latino Review’s Umberto Gonzales is to be believed.
That part of the rumour aside though, the thing that really got my attention was the section referring to the Captain Marvel solo movie. For those of you who don’t know, Kelly Sue DeConnick was actually the comic book writer who penned the Captain Marvel comic when it relaunched a few years back under that title (Carol Danvers was previously called Ms Marvel) with the brand new look and attitude for the character that has seen her finally becoming the A-list hero and public darling that Marvel have always wanted her to be. So she definitely “gets” the character and would actually be a fantastic choice to pen the script, even though she’s never written anything on the size/scope of a big budget Marvel movie.
But that’s where Jim Starlin comes in. As one of the biggest architects for the cosmic side of Marvel’s comic book universe – including creating Thanos – the guy knows epic like few other people, and I’m sure he would have some really great, really big ideas for the story.
Whoever does end up penning the script for the Captain Marvel solo movie, all I can say is that if she does suddenly show up in Avengers: Age of Ultron without having been seen/mentioned anywhere (in itself, a bloody impressive feat), fans are going to go crazy. And by fans, I mean me. Especially if she’s played by Vikings‘ Katheryn Winnick!

Okay I have not read comic books for some time now but Carol Danvers was Ms. Marvel and not Captain Marvel (an Kree Captain called Mar-Vel who defected) or did things change?

Like I mentioned in the article, the character was relaunched a while back as Captain Marvel. Basically, she was considered to have earned that title and all the legacy that goes with it (especially since her powers are Kree-based as well). It was basically her going to from cheesy b-lister to the big time with Captain America, Iron Man and the rest of the gang.
There’s actually a new Ms Marvel now, a young half-Inhuman Pakistani girl called Kamala Khan who took the title since Carol was her hero.
