It may not have been for everybody, but I loved Napoleon Dynamite. It was an obscure movie that made the audience fumble their way through a plot that would have your mind doing doughnuts before you even got a hint of what was happening. Director Jared Hess will not be doing this with his upcoming movie Masterminds though, which may actually be a good thing as tomfoolery can be a nice change!

Based on the real-life events of the 1997 Loomis Fargo Robbery in North Carolina, the 2nd largest bank robbery in US history at the time, the movie follows the idiot criminals (some 23 of them) who stole $17 million and were then promptly caught because, well, IDIOTS! Zach Galifianakis (The Hangover) plays an unassuming armoured truck driver who, when not shooting himself between the buttocks (thanks Forrest Gump), is busy stealing wads of cash from banks. Interestingly the role was first offered to Jim Carrey, and I think I would have enjoyed that! Anyway, the driver’s team of accomplices turn on him and attempt to use him as a scapegoat, and quite frankly a goat probably has more intelligence than the lot of them.

Kristen Wiig (Brides Maids), Jason Sudeikis (We’re the Millers) as well as two of Wiig’s future co-Ghostbusters, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones, round out the film’s great cast. Have a watch and see what you think. Too slapstick for you?

As mentioned above, this is actually based on a real life story, and in case you think that the writers are taking massive dramatic license with the idiocy on display in this adaptation, think again. You saw the mansion that Owen Wilson was sitting in in one of the scenes in the trailer? In real life the criminals bought the place with $20 bills… Yeah that’s untraceable! You can learn more about the actual heist and all the really dumb stuff that happened afterwards, in this NBC news report.

I think with a cast like this and a story that really was that silly you can’t go wrong! Masterminds is set to land 14 August overseas. We’ll let you know when it drops locally.
