Extras-750-final

Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

  • Rest in peace, Rober Z’Dar. The cult favourite lantern jawed actor of Maniac Cop fame has passed away at the age of 64. The 6’2″ actor, who turned a face deforming bout of Acromegaly into a prolific career as an imposing B-movie villain in the 1980’s and 90’s, suffered a heart attack in Florida over the weekend and eventually succumbed to further complications.
  • Raiders of the Lost Ark is about as perfect an action-adventure as there has ever been made, and that perfection starts right from the get-go with the film’s iconic boulder scene. It’s a sequence that has been imitated and referenced countless times since, and for good reason. But how was this cinematic gem put together?

“My great ambition is to be in a Fast and Furious movie. I so want to be a mad driver in a Fast and Furious movie. My claim to fame is I always do my own driving — I was on Top Gear, and I did [my lap] in a very good time. I keep putting it out there, and they never ask me. I’ll be in Fast and Furious 8. I have to say Vin Diesel is brilliant. I love Vin Diesel. He’s a great guy, smart — I love him. It’s partly because of him I’d like to be in one, but also the driving. I’d also love to do another Red-type movie, because those are such fun to do.”

  • Poster of the day: Death Proof

  • And in today’s episode of “Wait, what?!”: During a very insightful profile on Russell Crowe, it was revealed that before his death, Michael Jackson – yes, that Michael Jackson – used to play childish pranks on Crowe for years for no freaking reason.

“The zenith of Crowe’s fame does sound a bit disturbing in other ways. For one thing, he found himself on the receiving end of repeated nuisance calls from, of all people, Michael Jackson. “For two or three fucking years,” he says. “I never met him, never shook his hand, but he found out the name I stayed in hotels under, so it didn’t matter where I was, he’d ring up [and] do this kind of thing, like you did when you were 10, you know. ‘Is Mr Wall there? Is Mrs Wall there? Are there any Walls there? Then what’s holding the roof up? Ha ha.’ You’re supposed to grow out of doing that, right?”

  • There’s a new Dragonball Z movie coming out. Luckily, Dragonball Z: Battle of the Gods is not live-action. But it could have been. And would probably have looked like this.

  • I cared for The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones about as much as I care for a sinus headache, and now it appears that I need to not care about it all over again on a whole new format. It’s being reported that a new TV adaptation of Cassandra Clare’s YA book series, this time titled Shadowhunters, is being prepped at ABC who feel that “with over 35 million copies in print worldwide, ‘Shadowhunters’ is the perfect story to share with our audience.” I guess one box office failure wasn’t enough.
  • It seems that just because you’ve won an Oscar, doesn’t mean you get any respect, as Julianne Moore just found out. The Still Alice actor was hired to be the face of a new $4 million tourism campaign for Turkey, and filmed a short promo accordingly. However, she has since been cut from the deal and the whole campaign scrapped after officials weren’t happy with her “poor acting”. Yeesh.
  • With just a few weeks left until the fifth season of Game of Thrones, you may need a refresher on what happened in the show’s previous stint. But who has time to sit through like 12 hours of sad midgets, gratuitous sex and gory violence? (And no I’m not referring to Nick’s home movies). Luckily, the internet has come to the rescue!

  • Interstellar may have had a couple of big flaws in its narrative (A watch? You use a watch to send that much data?!), but it was still left me slack-jawed at its unabashed love for space travel and championing the power of the human spirit. So of course we’re going to make jokes about it.

If you have anything you would like to contribute to Extras, whether it be interesting stories, funny videos, or artistic photos of yourself in morally questionable poses, feel free to drop a mail to kervyn@themovies.co.za.

  1. I saw Interstellar is on box office, might give it a watch (LOL) again this weekend. Also pretty bad ass poster for Death Proof!
