Cutesy heads to the top of the chart as Dreamworks launches its first animated feature of the year, the first of a double bill for Jennifer Lopez on the chart. But it’s highly doubtful the same audience would sit through both…

Taking the number one spot of the week is Home, the new Dreamworks animation starring Rihanna, Jim Parsons and Jennifer Lopez. It’s enjoyed a strong opening weekend – comparable with Big Hero 6 – but is Dreamworks’ worst-scoring movie since Shrek the Third. Yet what critics think hardly matter with these kind of films. With such a start will Home be headed as the first major animated hit of the year? Spongebob did well, but still made a fairly modest amount when you consider what these movies can take in.

Moving to second place is Insurgent, the sequel to Divergent. It is slowly clawing its way up to the earnings of the first movie, but it’s doubtful that there are spontaneous celebrations about its success. Can the series live on for a third film? Nonetheless, Insurgent is doing okay, probably because everyone is jonesing for the next Hunger Games experience.

Also stepping down one spot to third is Ballade vir ‘n Enkeling, the local remake of the popular Eighties drama. The Afrikaans movie is repeating the success of Mooirivier, another local language drama that stayed on the charts for a short spell earlier this year. But Enkeling is charting significantly better and is likely to take the current top spot as the best performing South African movie thus far in 2015.

At four is Focus, the Will Smith thriller about con artists – doing consistently well with local audiences since it entered the top spot three weeks ago. But it’s not been a hit and just barely scraped back its production budget. The Fresh Prince still needs a fresh hit.

The naughty, naughty chart ravager Fifty Shades Of Grey continues its stay on the top 10, now at fifth, while the less naughty senior citizens of The Second Best Marigold Hotel are at sixth.

At seven is the chart debut of another naughty movie, the Jennifer Lopez vehicle The Boy Next Door. It’s basically Fatal Attraction in reverse – if you can remember that movie: Lopez is the hot older woman who gets involved with a studly young guy. But he gets obsessed and things turn weird.

Eighth is the gun-toting American Sniper, one of the year’s huge, huge, huge hits and Clint Eastwood’s financial magnum opus. You can roll in the domestic (US) earnings of his second to fourth films – Gran Torino, Million Dollar Baby and Unforgiven – and American Sniper still made more.

At number nine is the current animation benchmark of 2015 – Spongebob Squarepants: Sponge Out Of Water. The movie is now celebrating eight weeks on the charts and will likely squeeze in one more before it bows out. On the other hand, this is a HUGE drop for it – falling from fourth place a week ago.

Finally, at number ten is the debut of Top Five, Chris Rock’s movie about people recalling their top five lists. It’s actually a strange low debut for such a film – comedies featuring a black cast, especially starring a-list talent like Rock, tend to get out of the gates at a better position. But the movie has been a modest hit all-round – earning only $25 million at the U.S. movie houses.

Leaving the top 10 this week are Chappie, The Cobbler and The Wedding Ringer – the latter the only one of the three to enjoy a great run on the local charts.

Fifty Shades of Grey remains the top earner on the chart at R36 million, a million rands higher than last week.
