THE LAST SHIP will save us in this poster and trailer for Season 2

Despite me poking fun at Michael Bay regularly, I must admit that I got quite hooked on the Bay produced The Last Ship from its debut through to the final episode of its first season. Maybe it was the lack of racist robots or the gender equality eye candy in the form of stars Eric “McSteamy” Dane and Rhona “the original Lara Croft” Mitra (or possibly even the gripping story and tight action each week – but let’s not get crazy here) but America seemed to agree with me.

Playing out like the 3-way love-child of Crimson Tide, The Rock and Outbreak, the show’s premiere on the TNT network last year was the biggest basic cable debut of 2014 and by the end of its first season it had garnered the top spot on the ratings charts for best new series of the year overall, pulling in an average of 14.5 million viewers in the US alone each week. That’s a whole lot of people.

So naturally, The Last Ship got renewed for a second season almost immediately, and now the first trailer for that sophomore season is finally here. And it’s very Bay-ish. So cue up the fog horns, choppy edits, slow-mo shots of choppers and battleships blowing stuff up… all of which we luckily don’t really see in the series itself, in case you were worried. Well, except for the “battleships blowing stuff up” bit which happens quite frequently. Thankfully.

With the first season already seeing Dr. Brinkley (Mitra) finding a cure to the virus that has killed off most of the world’s population and forced these survivors to band together on this ship, it would appear that the job of actually saving people and restoring order to the world truly begins now. That is obviously made just a tad difficult by the fact that the last time we saw the crew of the USS Nathan James, their ship (along with the lab full of vaccine) was taken over by the shady remnants of the US government.

Based on William Brinkley’s popular novel, “The Last Ship” chronicles a global catastrophe that nearly decimates the world’s population. Because of its positioning, the Navy destroyer U.S.S. Nathan James avoided falling victim to the devastating tragedy. But now, Captain Tom Chandler (series star Eric Dane) and his crew must confront the reality of their new existence in a world where they may be among the few remaining survivors.

The Last Ship also stars Adam Baldwin, Travis Van Winkle, Charles Parnell, Christina Elmore, John Pyper Ferguson and Jocko Sims and is scheduled to return to US screens on Sunday, June 21, with a two-hour premier. Hopefully, we won’t have long to wait before it hits local screens as well.
