Rumour: Solo Spider-Man movie to be titled SPIDER-MAN: THE NEW AVENGER

Spider-Man-Image-Avengers2If you haven’t seen Avengers: Age of Ultron yet I’m going to give you a quick pro-active spoiler: Spider-Man isn’t in it. We’ve been told that we should expect the wall-crawler’s MCU debut in Captain America: Civil War but that didn’t stop the rumour mill from claiming that he would actually be joining the Avengers now already. Which is not true as many of you probably found out this weekend past. But that’s something that will definitely happen, and maybe even a bit sooner than expected if another rumour is to be believed.

When it was revealed that Drew Goddard (Daredevil, Cabin In the Woods, Cloverfield) would be writing/directing a solo Spider-Man movie in 2018, properly introducing the character after what I am certain will nothing more than a glorified cameo in Civil War, the rumoured title of that solo flick was The Spectacular Spider-Man. That’s a title that’s pulled straight from the comics, and more importantly distances itself from the Amazing Spider-Man franchise. But according to what Latino Review’s Umberto Gonzales is hearing, Marvel be looking to distance themselves from the previous films and establish the context of the new film even more definitively that that.

“Take with the tiniest grain of salt pending further confirmation. I’m being told the working title for the untitled SPIDER-MAN stand alone film is SPIDER-MAN: THE NEW AVENGER Again, it’s Sunday so take with grain pending further confirmation. What do you think of title?”

All stocked up on the sodium chloride? Good! Now let’s look at this objectively. Sure that title is a mouthful and nowhere near as elegant as Spectacular Spider-Man, but it fits in with Captain America: The First Avenger, telling us that Marvel is putting Spidey on the same sort-of social status as Cap. The title also leaves no doubt that this story is not only taking place firmly in the Avengers continuity of the MCU, but that we’re going to see Spider-Man join the team by the end of it i.e. no dicking around on unnecessary origin stories, just straight into the big leagues.

What’s more, when the inevitable sequels are made, it will also help to keep the movie in line with Marvel’s practice of not doing numbered sequels, i.e. Spectacular Spider-Man 2. Now the follow-up flicks could be called Spider-Man: Sins Past or Spider-Man: The Clone Saga (please don’t do any of those, Marvel, I’m begging you!).

With Spider-Man himself not even being cast yet, it’s still very early days in the web-slinger’s MCU life, so like the man said above, take all of this with a grain of salt, even if said man has had a very solid track record as of late when it comes to Marvel news.

We don’t know if any of the movies that Sony had planned will still happen or not. We know that Drew Goddard still wants to do a Sinister Six movie as well, and since it was the furthest along in development of all the spinoffs it has the biggest chance of still happening. All the other stuff though, like the female-centric movie and the young Aunt May as a spy rubbish is more than likely scrapped.

If the rumours are to be believed, Peter Parker may become Penelope Parker… Could be an interesting take on the character. And would help them distance this Spidey from the previous iterations.

Although they have said it won’t be an origin story because everyone knows “Peter Parker” and who he is… So perhaps they will stick with the original. Who knows… I’m just interested to see where they take it – Spidey was always my favourite superhero as a kid! ‘Bout time they get him into a film series where he can last and they can tell all the stories that should be told.

Stop visiting the dodgy parts of the internet :D. There’s been no hint of a gender swap, and in fact Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige outright said that it will definitely be Peter Parker and nobody else under the mask. In fact he actually said that at this point in time in the MCU, Peter Parker is already Spider-Man, we just haven’t seen him yet.

But the seedier parts are the more fun parts! 😉 🙂

I’m happy they keep it as Peter – more widely known, so easier buy-in from the uninitiated. Just as long as they do ol’ Spidey justice, I’ll be happy.

    Sounds interesting.
Spidey has always been my favourite super-hero (Batman gets a close second) and I really hope that the movie does him justice.
