There was a part of me left disappointed after Mozart In The Jungle turned out to be a shallow and silly series. It was happy to roll out the solid actors and great production value, but all that couldn’t hide the sad little soap opera plot.

Its failure is a pity, as this is a great time to tell stories that wouldn’t normally get prime time TV treatment, stories about classical orchestras or ballet dancers. Starz, the most notorious of the top TV platforms, has taken note and plans to release Flesh and Bone, a mini series limited to eight episodes. Here’s the trailer:

This looks interesting, but also feels a little like it hits every beat typical to such a drama: insecure newcomers, overly hostile older person, utterly mental trainer, bad city doing bad things, cute boyfriend material, doing low-paying jobs, blood, etc.

Maybe it’s just the trailer, though, since the series is being created by a Breaking Bad show alum, Moira Walley-Beckett, and the show is appearing on Starz. Maybe it needs a red-band trailer to really show what it’s about.

Here’s the synopsis:

Flesh and Bone is an eight-episode limited series following Claire, a young ballet hopeful (with a troubled past, obviously) as she attempts to crack the New York ballet scene. But standing in her way are strippers, an angry director, violence, and a possible break in, if the trailer is to be believed. Sarah Hay stars as Claire, and Ben Daniels (House of Cards), Josh Helman (X-Men Days of Future Past), Damon Herriman (Justified‘s Dewey Crowe), Tina Benko, and Tovah Feldshuh (The Walking Dead‘s Deanna) co-star.
