STAR WARS REBELS could cross over with the live-action movies

When Disney wiped the slate clean of the Star Wars expanded universe after they announced their ambitious movie plans, essentially resetting decades-worth of canon to just the original trilogy and… those other ones, they also cancelled the long-running and popular Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series (Ahsoka!); which itself ended up in a sort of canon-limbo (Ahsoka?). That was quickly replaced by Star Wars Rebels which got off to a bit of a slow start in its maiden episodes, and the less said about the space-kettie the better, but certainly picked up steam as the season progressed (Ahsoka!!).

Canon-wise the series sits between Episode III Revenge of the Sith and Episode IV A New Hope as a small band of rebels lead by new character Kanan Jarrus (voiced by Freddie Prinze Jr) fight seemingly-alone against the newly formed Empire. There was never any indication that the series would link directly to the movies, but in a recent interview with Slashfilm Star Wars Rebels producers Simon Kinberg and Dave Filoni commented that it could potentially happen at some point, maybe even with some characters making the force-jump into a live-action appearance (Ahsoka!).

First up Simon Kinberg spoke about the possibility their story could cross over into the movies or that events from the movies could influence the series:

Absolutely there’s been conversation about it. That this story could be a story that crosses over into other films, whether it’s A New Hope or other movies. And that movies could potentially even enter into our timeline and our moment. It’s a big galaxy. So, you know, things are happening all over the place that don’t necessarily have to react to each other, the way we react to news around the world. We never meet the Chilean miners that are trapped in that mine. We know about it and the world reacts to it. So each of the different stories has to acknowledge the reality of what’s ever happening in that moment in time.

But sure, and I think one of the things that’s really fun about Rebels, and potentially some of the films, is there’s a sort of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern version of these stories. I mean, the stories that George [Lucas] told were stories about specific characters in a massive galaxy. And so there are a lot of other characters’ stories that he hasn’t told.

In case, like me, you wondered what the hell he meant by “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern version of these stories” it refers to two characters created by William Shakespeare that appeared in Hamlet, and who were later parodied in titular, satirical plays by W.S. Gilbert and Tom Stoppard. Thank you, Wikipedia. So basically he means they can tell stories using existing characters in different ways. Why didn’t you just say that?

Co-producer Dave Filoni was asked specifically if characters from Star Wars Rebels could transition to live-action:

I would never say never to that. I mean, now that Lucasfilm is so integrated in story from top to bottom in all different forms of media, we already have had our characters cross over into novels. We’re gonna have our crossover into comic books. I would say it’s entirely possible. And I would encourage it.

I’ve talked to the creators of the other films going on and, you know, I’ve always made it clear if you want somebody, just let me know. They can jump over there. I don’t care. I’m all for it. Because I think it makes the experience for fans so much stronger. And what a moment it would be to see some of these animated characters up there live on the screen. It would be great for me too.

And me, it would be great for me too, because you may have guessed there’s someone I’d like to see in live-action. Hint: It’s Ahsoka Tano(!!!), who I maybe like more than Darryn likes Batman, Kervyn likes Superman, or Nick likes non-reflective surfaces. Are there any original characters from Rebels, or The Clone Wars for that matter, that you’d like to see make the move to the big screen? Fair warning, any answer that doesn’t start with “Ahsoka!” or “Ahsoka! and…” is wrong.
