Extras-750-final

Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

  • Yesterday was Star Wars Day aka May the 4th, which makes today Revenge of the Fifth! So to celebrate, here’s a guy playing the Star Wars theme on flamethrower bagpipes while as the BB8 droid from The Force Awakens, because why not!

  • Will Poulter is about to go from clowning around with Jennifer Aniston in We’re the Millers to clowning around inside your worst nightmares, as the young actor has signed on to star as the monstrous clown Pennywise in director Cary “True Detective” Fukunaga’s upcoming remake of Stephen King’s It. The role was famously played originally by Tim Curry in the 1981 TV miniseries adaptation that caused an entire generation to stop dreaming about running away to the circus. Fukunaga’s version will be split over two films.
  • Did you know that having Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow and Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner get romantically involved in Avengers: Age of Ultron is the worst thing ever? I’m talking like using puppy corpses to club baby seals bad. I mean that must be the case. Why else would people spew such vile hatred at writer/director Joss Whedon on social media that it has now forced him to quit Twitter?

And for the record, before I get attacked, no, I don’t agree 100% with the Black Widow development, but that doesn’t matter one bit because nothing that happens in a movie should make us lose all dignity and turn into internet savages.

  • Poster of the day: Hero

  • Looks like Levar Burton is a big fan of 1970’s disco band Odyssey as he’s zipping up his boots and going back to his roots! (Sorry) Yes, Roots, the iconic 1970’s TV miniseries about American slavery, is getting a remake, and Burton – who kicked off his career by famously starring in the original as slave Kunta Kinte – will act as co-executive producer. This new version is said to be drawing more heavily on the Pulitzer Prize winning 1976 novel by Alex Haley that inspired the original series, as well as incorporating “carefully researched new scholarship of the time” to depict “a historical portrait of American slavery recounting the journey of one family’s will to survive… despite enormous hardship and inhumanity.”
  • Kul jou hier, kul jou daar, en SyFy! After developing a pilot last year, the aforementioned US cable network has officially ordered to series The Magicians, an urban fantasy drama series based on Lev Grossman’s best-selling series of books. The Magicians – which we told you about last year – is sort of an adult version of Harry Potter with lots of dark and interesting twists. Unfortunately, there’s nobody named Martino* in it though.
  • Following on from yesterday‘s official cast photo reveal for Suicide Squad, some new set photos have popped up that give us a much clearer look at the cast, especially Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. Also Margot Robbie’s butt.
  • Did you guys see the new trailer?! You know, that trailer! Oh, you know the one I’m talking about. It’s THE TRAILER! Ah, now you’re getting it… Yeah, that trailer. That’s the one.

  • Bill Pullman’s character in Independence Day, Thomas J. Whitmore, was the greatest movie president of all time. WAS. That’s because it’s just been revealed that Sela Ward has joined the cast of  Independence Day 2 and will be playing the new US Chief, President Lanford. Yes, it apparently takes a sci-fi movie about aliens invading Earth to get a woman in the White House. Sigh.
  • The Avengers movies are so unrealistic! I mean, they make use of so many high-tech gadgets while on their missions, and that stuff always works perfectly. But as somebody that has worked in IT for the last 13 years, I can confidently tell you that in the real world, technology will always screw you over at the worst possible moment. So if you don’t mind, Marvel, I would like the next movie to be a bit more realistic. Something like this:

*If you don’t get that joke, then clearly you’re not old enough
