X-Men spinoff NEW MUTANTS officially in development

For a race that’s supposed to be a minority, there sure are a lot of mutants that pop up all over the place (and I’m not just talking about Wolverine being in everything!). And with X-Men: Apocalypse seemingly being the end of the latest era when it comes to mutant movies – not to mention Hugh Jackman hanging up the claws after Wolverine 3 – it’s time to welcome in some new new blood.

That’s exactly what Fox is doing as Deadline is reporting that a movie based on popular X-Men spinoff comic “New Mutants” is in development. What’s more, Josh Boone, the director behind 2014 teen drama smash hit The Fault In Our Stars, has already been tapped to direct the movie as well as co-write the script with Knate Gwaltney, the writer behind upcoming Hall Berry thriller Kidnap.

In the comics, the New Mutants were literally what their name implies: the next generation of heroes trained at Charles Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters. The very popular team had many members over the years, but it’s the early core group introduced in 1982 by longtime X-Men scribe Chris Claremont that is the most well known: Cannonball, Dani Moonstar, Magik, Magma, Warlock, Karma, Wolfsbane and Sunspot. The latter was actually seen in X-Men: Days of Future Past, but that was in the dark future timeline that no longer exists.

It’s uncertain if Sunspot or any of the original New Mutants will be the focus of Boone’s movie as cast and script details are being kept tightly under wraps, with Deadline only reporting that the movie “introduces a new crop of mutant characters born with special powers.”. And it might also just be quite a wait until find out who those characters are, as Boone is already attached to an adaptation of Stephen King’s The Stand, as well as having been linked to a new reboot of Anne Rice’s Vampire Chronicles stories (which were previously adapted as Interview With a Vampire and Queen of the Damned). Those productions would probably cone first, meaning that New Mutants would more than likely only be slated for 2018 at the earliest.

There’s one intriguing possibility for another spinoff that’s also in development: X-Force (which we last heard was being developed by Kick-Ass 2 helmer Jeff Wadlow, but which has been silent for more than a year now). In the comics, one of the New Mutants’ trainers was none other Cable, the time travelling leader of X-Force (He’s also the alternate future son of Cyclops and Jean Grey, but lets not get into all that comic book madness now). Cable actually made his first appearance in “New Mutants #87”, so it could be really cool if he was introduced in New Mutants, so that he can then go off to form his one, more aggressive/pro-active team in X-Force. The only problem with bringing him into New Mutants is that it will push their shoulder pad and belt pouch budget exponentially.
