Midweek Movie Mouth-Off: TV trailers gone wrong

It’s difficult to get a movie trailer right, and trailers for TV shows are even harder, given the amount of material they have to work with. You need to show enough to get a decent amount of hype, but you don’t want to overplay your hand and give everything away. You also need to piece it together juuust right. It’s a fine balance, one that the trailer to Supergirl did not manage to achieve.

Going on the trailer alone, I feel like I’ve already watched the first five episodes. It was overly long, showed you pretty much everything about the character and her development, an annoying amount of clichés and way too much focus on the girl part of Supergirl. It’s almost put me off watching the show all together.

On the other hand, the two trailers for True Detective have the perfect balance. The first one, completely dialogue free with an emotive song, set the tone and the mood. In the second, we get to hear some dialogue, enough to get you hooked but not enough to make you feel like you’ve watched the whole damn show.

So what do you feel about trailers for TV shows? Are you forgiving enough to let a bad trailer slide and watch the show regardless, or would a terrible trailer put you off all together?

I’m not too fussed about trailers for TV shows. I’ll always watch the first episode to see what it’s like & whether or not I think it has potential. Plus for me it’s more about watching the story unfold than knowing the ending, it’s not like it’s difficult to guess the ending on most shows.

That Supergirl trailer was god damn aweful. I’ll still give it a shot again though.

Awful? It seems whoever is developing comic driven series have all seemed to have forgotten what the words “Secret Identity” mean.

Legends of Tomorrow got me all fired up. Then again I love Arrow and Flash.

Generally, I feel “less is more” for any trailer. It should tease you enough to watch the movie or series without giving the plot twists/everything away… (I’m looking at you Terminator: Genisys…)

In saying that, I really liked that Supergirl trailer. Was a touch too long and yeah, it’s probably a large portion of the first episode(s) shown, but it showed us exactly what it’s about. Some concerns people may have had is how involved would Superman be, and it’s great to see that at the moment, he’s just a casual name drop here or past reference there. Supergirl seems like a “girly” show at times which can be negative but it also looks like it has some quirky charm as well as some serious butt kicking, which is not too dissimilar to the Flash.

It’s important to get interest going for a new series, more so than movies, as the series can get cancelled before its off to great heights as their potential promises… (rip firefly). Even more so nowadays, which is probably why they’ve shown so much in the “first look” trailer. Doesn’t matter how great the show is if no-one bothers to watch the first episode…
