Look, I’m definitely not saying that seeing Brendan Fraser in ponytails is the only reason to watch Texas Rising, but it’s definitely the thing that made me click play on this first trailer for the show (after sniggering immaturely, of course). And it’s a good thing that I did!

History Channel’s upcoming 10-episode mini-series focuses on the aftermath of the historic 19th century events of the Alamo (if you don’t know what those events are, then maybe you should start watching more History Channel), following a group of famous Texas Rangers as they get caught up in what would become known as the Texas Revolution.

As fan of both Westerns and historical literature, that story would already grab my attention by itself, but then you have two-time Oscar winner Roland Joffe (The Mission, The Killing Fields) in the director’s chair for all 10 episodes and I’m definitely paying attention. Joffe has also filled the series with a list of fan favourite and veteran actors including Bill Paxton, the aforementioned Fraser, Ray Liotta, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Thomas Jane, Christopher McDonald, Robert Knepper, Crispin Glover, Jeff Fahey, Kris Kristofferson and more.

Seeing as how much of a fan I am of History Channel’s other historical drama series, Vikings, I’m definitely giving this a watch, especially since it looks brilliant in the trailer below. Just try not to laugh at Fraser’s hair in the pic above.

The Alamo was not the end of the story, it was only the beginning, and “Texas Rising” details what followed in the fight for an independent Texas. In 1836, west of the Mississippi was considered the Wild West and the Texas frontier was viewed as hell on earth. With colliding cultures all fighting for stakes to this territory, no one was safe. But this was a time of bravery, a time to die for what you believed in and a time to stand tall against the fierce Mexican General Santa Anna and his forces. General Sam Houston, the rag tag Rangers and the legendary “Yellow Rose of Texas,” lead this story of the human will to fight for independence despite nearly insurmountable odds and to claim a piece of history for all eternity.

Texas Rising is set to debut in the US on Monday, 25 May.

  1. So it’s… not… a comedy western? I’m sniggering immaturely at those pigtails too.
