Whether you love or hate the Transformers movies they’re here to stay, because so far the four movies have grossed close to $4 billion at the box office. Darryn reviewed the latest Transformers movie, Transformers: Age of Extinction, here and, well, at least he liked it more than Superfast. And with the financial success and overwhelming positive response Marvel have received from creating their shared movie universe it didn’t come as much of a surprise when Paramount announced they’d be following in those Hulk-sized footsteps and creating a Transformers universe.
Darryn told us a while back the plan is to create a writing room to oversee the franchise. Michael Bay (who’s directed all the movies so far), Steven Spielberg and Lorenzo di Bonaventura were all tapped as executive producers; and Akiva Goldsman was appointed head writer. Now, as per Coming Soon, we’ve learnt who else will be staffing the think baysplosion tank, and it’s a decent list to be honest as so far joining the team are:
- Robert Kirkman – The Walking Dead
- Writing duo Art Marcum and Matt Holloway – Iron Man, Punisher: War Zone
- Jeff Pinkner – Fringe, Lost
- Zak Penn – The Incredible Hulk, X-Men franchise
Other than the obvious Transformers 5 (Tran5former5!) there’s no hint yet on just how they’re planning to expand the universe, but that’s a pretty good team to have working on it. The current movies are the poster children for style over substance, but still enjoyable to watch for the most part. If this writing team can inject some (much) better story-telling into the mix, which they’re definitely capable of, then I’m all for it. What do you think?
