I’m pretty sure that when kids say that they’re going to hang around at school at night, they probably don’t mean from the rafters at the end of a noose. Clearly Charlie, the ghostly bad guy in hotly anticipated horror flick The Gallows, doesn’t quite understand the distinction, based on what we’re seeing in this first trailer for producer Jason Blum’s (Paranormal Activity series, The Purge series, Insidious series) latest micro-budget scare-fest.
Much like Paranormal Activity, the movie that really launched the Blumhouse Productions label, The Gallows is going found-footage, which usually elicits an instant bit of side-eye from me. But there’s hope here that this could be used to similarly creepy effect like in movies like Rec and Blair Witch Project. Either that or there’s so much “action” on the screen that you can’t make out anything except a red blur.
Check out the trailer below to see for yourself.
Twenty years after an accident caused the death of the lead actor during a high school play, students at the same small town school resurrect the failed stage production in a misguided attempt to honor the anniversary of the tragedy—but ultimately find out that some things are better left alone.
The Gallows was directed by Travis Cluff and Chris Lofing, and stars Cassidy Gifford, Ryan Shoos, Reese Mishler and Pfeifer Brown. It is scheduled for release on July 10, 2015.
