Hulk-Hogan

Let me tell you something, brother! As somebody who grew up in the 80’s, I was exposed to far too much incredi-bad action movies and WWF WWE wrestling. And a few times along the years, those two interests even intersected thanks to wrestling legend Hulk Hogan and his fledgeling movie career. And now it looks like that may just happen again.

During an interview at English Body Power Expo (via /Film), Hogan legdropped the bomb that he may be in the running for a role in Sylvester Stallone’s fourth Expendables movie. And from the sound of things, Sly maybe wants him to go full “Hollywood Hogan” bad guy mode.

“We’re trying to figure out a way to maybe turn me into the most evil man in the world. Y’know, Stallone gave me my first break and he’s been a great friend. We had a great conversation, talking about the possibilities. ‘Can I still run, can I still jump?’ Well, not as fast or not as high, but I think Hollywood could find a good stunt man to help me out.”

The “first break” that Hogan is referring to is of course Rocky III, in which Hogan played the crazed wrestler Thunderlips (Best. Name. Ever) who nearly tears Stallone’s head off in an exhibition match. And now he may just get to finish the job, nearly 40 years later.

expendables-3

While the first Expendables film was far too serious, the second just completely leaned into its ludicrous, nostalgia-heavy appeal going for maximum in-jokes and gags to brilliantly fun effect. The third film though pulled back that meme-worthy angle a bit and also completely toned down the franchise’s trademark over the top violence to try to appeal to a new PG-13 audience. And while the end result was a serviceable action film with some decent-enough set pieces, I think it was a misstep that resulted in the loss of much of its spark.

Now Expendables 4 hasn’t been officially greenlit yet, but even though the last film was the least successful of the the franchise, it still made enough ($206m) to possibly warrant another sequel. Stallone has already revealed recently though that if it does get the official thumbs-up, that the film will more than likely once again be going R-Rated as clearly the PG-13 experiment was a “horrible miscalculation”.

In my opinion, also taking it back a bit to the self-deprecating tone won’t just help the franchise itself, but would also be the perfect environment to introduce a walking cartoon like Hulk Hogan as the villain. I mean, just look at how incredible a bad guy an unhinged Jean Claude Van Damme made in Expendables 2.

So would you like to see Hulkamania running wild again with Hogan as a bad guy in the next Expendables movie? Or maybe you think that this is just scraping the bottom of that nostalgic barrel now and it’s time for these leathery old geezers to just pack it in?

Here’s the full interview (skip to 09:46 the mark for the relevant quote):

  1. It is impossible to put the Hulk down it seems. He’s going to be acting until his grave kicks him in the junk.
