Confession time: I kinda like last year’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Now before I get my head chewed off, please note the “kinda”. The film boasted some godawful dialogue choices (Raphael’s tough-guy “Cowabunga” was painful), some really silly plot points, annoying co-stars (here’s looking at you, Will Arnett) and of course Michelangelo looks like Jacob Zuma and there’s just no unseeing that piece of nightmare fuel.

But for all of those problems and more, the chemistry between the Turtles were fantastic, the visuals were great and the action sequence (especially the fights scenes) were very well choreographed. And then there was Shredder, a whirling dervish of blades and sharp edges, the crazy over-the-top version we got on-screen was like a super badass kung fu fighting Swiss army knife. But alas, [SPOILER ALERT] that didn’t stop him from getting his butt kicked by the Turtles and falling to his death off a building.

But you can’t keep a good bad guy down as Brian Tee (The Wolverine) has been cast as a new version of Shredder – how the two are linked is not yet clear – and he’s brought some more iconic bad guys with him. We’ve already heard that fan-favourite henchmen Bebop and Rocksteady will be showing up and that comedian Gary Anthony Williams will be playing Bebop, and now comes word that WWE wrestler Sheamus will be playing his porcine partner in crime. It’s also been revealed that Brittany Ishibashi has joined the cast to play Karai, Shredder’s daughter (yes, somebody did the nasty with Shredder, blades and all).

And thanks to the Daily Mail, we have our first looks at the villainous foursome courtesy of some set pics. You will of course notice Hall and Sheamus’s Bebop and Rocksteady are still human here, just like they initially appeared in the classic 1980’s cartoon. It is assumed that their transformation into a mutant humanoid warthog and rhino respectively will somehow factor into the film’s plot. Tee’s Shredder also appears to be a lot more realistic here in his costume design – just minus the trademark helmet, which probably comes later – so I’m suspecting that his character will be a bit more developed than the previous incarnation, who was essentially little more than a cool CG-effect and some knives.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 will see Megan Fox and Will Arnett reprising their roles as reported April O’Neill and her cameraman Vernon Fenwick. The latter will be getting a new love interest courtesy of model Alessandra Ambrosio. The new cast will be rounded out by Tyler Perry (yes, that Tyler Perry) as evil scientist and Mouser inventor Baxter Stockman, while Arrow star Stephen Amell will debut a new version of fan-favourite vigilante Casey Jones. Laura Linney has also been cast in an unspecified role.

Michael Bay will still be producing, but his protege Jonathan Liebesman will not be returning to direct the sequel. Instead, Earth To Echo helmer David Green will be behind the camera this time around. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 is set for release on June 3, 2016.
