Midweek Movie Mouth-Off: what great movie can you never watch again?

This might sound like an odd topic, but hear me out. You get your well loved movies right, the ones you’ll watch over and over again, the ones you basically know every line to and still get the feels at the end. Or even the ones you’ll watch repeatedly to get every hidden detail, the ones you’ll want to revisit time and again just to exist in that universe. But, I’ve found that sometimes, and it happens very rarely, you’ll get a movie that is excellent in every way, but you can’t watch it again.

This happened to me with Fury. It was a brilliant movie, from the acting and the script to the cinematography and the score and I could go on about it but you get the idea. I just don’t think I could sit through it a second time. It was just… really heavy. Like, I finished watching it and I sat for about five minutes just thinking about what happened. The whole thing weighed on my mind for days afterwards. The experience was so complete that I think a second viewing would detract from how I felt the first time around.

Has this ever happened to you? Have you come across a movie that experience that was just right that you know you could never repeat?

If I think a movie’s good I’ll watch it again, only thing that might give me pause is that if I know it’s heavy emotionally I’ll need to be in the right frame of mind.

Fury… That’s a good one, actually – it was a rather dark and heavy movie. Brilliant in every way! But very heavy.

I can’t actually think of any brilliant movie I haven’t / wouldn’t watch again… If I love it at the cinema, I’ll usually make sure to buy it when it’s released and will then watch it again at some point. I think if the movie is a heavier movie (like Fury), I’d have to watch it when I’m in a certain frame of mind… But other than that, if it’s good I’ll definitely check it out again.

Me it’s the original Hackers movie. It was awesome back in the day, but re-watching it kinda ruins the magic it had O_o

I recently re-watched Requiem for a Dream and I really think it will last me until the day I die. That movie has the impact of an asteroid hitting a planet delivered through the tip of a needle. Really gets under your skin and doesn’t let go.

I’ve seen Requiem thrice. On both the second and third occasions it took some serious willpower to sit thru it. It’s such an utterly incredible movie, but it just chews you up emotionally.

Get ready to feel all the feels. And possibly want to scrub yourself in the shower afterwards. Maybe not sleep for a while.

I cannot re-watch that. Had it with me for a while but couldn’t get myself to watch it again.

I agree. It’s an incredibly potent story, but very grim. Watching it is not a pleasant experience, and everything in the film is visceral enough to remember for a long while.
