Four – count them: four! – new movies this week. That is a nice change from the doldrums of the charts seven days ago. But is there anything worth seeing?
Starting at number one, it’s Pitch Perfect 2. I have nothing left to say about this movie, other than it has held its top reign for three weeks now. So quite a few people out there like it. And Rebel Wilson is in it, who I recall seeing in Pain & Gain. She was probably the funniest thing in that disaster. Yeah, I’m out of ideas.
Number two is Mad Max: Fury Road. Sadly the much-loved apocalyptic actioner is still not doing incredibly well. But it’s not really a flop either and still has legs, maintaining its second position.
At the third spot is Avengers: Age of Ultron, the so-so sequel starring everyone’s once unknown comic heroes. Honestly, until the movies started, the Hulk was probably the most famous of the lot. This movie has also not shifted places.
Fourth is the debut of local drama Treurgrond, which appears to be about a sad Steve Hofmeyr. Actually it’s about farm murders, but that being such a contentious topic I’m not gonna touch it. But this will be interesting to watch in terms of traction. The local movie with the longest chart presence this year and the one to beat remains Ballade vir ‘n Enkeling, which stayed for five weeks. With a lead like Hofmeyr and a topical subject, Treurgrond might do very well.
Sliding down one place is Tomorrowland, the Disney-loving movie that just did not get out of the gates strongly. It’s probably going to be a flop, but at least it has already earned more than 2015’s standing bomb, Jupiter Ascending.
If you like Hugh Grant, you can watch the number six movie arrival The Rewrite. He plays a washed-up screenwriter who takes up a job at a college and falls in love with Marisa Tomei. Can you believe she is fifty?! Doesn’t look a day over 30…
The seventh movie and another debut is Age of Adaline, some yarn about a woman who doesn’t age and the stuff she goes through across the decades.
Eight is the Poltergeist remake, another newcomer, which reviews say should have stayed dead. But maybe audiences disagree. It may still get some good time on the charts considering the dearth of horrors at the moment.
Taking a big plunge is Hot Pursuit, the buddy cop movie that also apparently should have stayed unmade. It debuted at fifth position last week, but obviously audiences are getting wise to it.
Finally, at tenth, Fast & Furious 7. It also dropped four spots, but that’s only because everyone has seen it by now. After eight weeks on the charts this is bound to leave soon, but I think it doesn’t beat Spongebob Squarepants. That reached nine weeks.
Leaving the charts are Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2, Yellow Bird, Get Hard and Somer Son.
The top earner remains Fast & Furious 7, now having earned R71 million.
