Rumour: Matthew Vaughn/Jon Favreau up for 2nd STAR WARS spinoff; focuses on Han Solo/Boba Feta rivalry

Here’s all the confirmed facts we have about the second planned Star Wars Anthology film: Josh Trank is no longer directing it… And that’s it. While the recent Star Wars Celebration saw plenty of details spilled for Gareth Edwards’ Star Wars: Rogue One, Trank and his film were kept completely out of the limelight, possibly because Disney/Lucasfilm knew they were on the verge of axing him. So all we’ve had to go on so far are rumours. And another juicy one has just joined the fray.

Reliable scoopers Schmoes Know are reporting that Disney/Lucasfilm are looking at Matthew Vaughn (Kingsman, X-Men: First Class, Kick-Ass) and Jon Favreau (Iron Man 1 & 2, Chef, Swingers) as contenders to take over the director’s chair from Trank. Not only are Vaughn and Favreau both fantastic picks for directors (with Favreau already having a working relationship with Disney thanks to his Marvel efforts), have previously stated they wanted to work int his universe, are both coming off successful movies and have a huge gap in their schedule right when the movie would go into production, but they were already in the mix when Disney was looking at somebody to helm Star Wars: The Force Awakens. They may have lost out to JJ Abrams then, but one of them could just be returning to the Force after all.

And as for the story they will be telling, well, we’ve been hearing rumours for a while now that it could either be a young Han Solo story, or perhaps even a Boba Fett “western” adventure. Why the conflicting rumours? Because according to Schmoes Know they’re both right! They’re claiming that the still untitled Star Wars Anthology spinoff film will in fact be taking place between Star Wars: Episode III- Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: Episode IV- A New Hope, and will be focusing on the rivalry between the two fan-favourite characters that is only briefly referenced in the movies as well as in the now-defunct Expanded Universe stories. What’s more its being reported that Lando, Chewwbacca and Bossk will all make appearances.

With Edwards’ Rogue One being described as a military/war movie, Disney reportedly want to differentiate this by diving into the “hive of scum and villainy” in the Star Wars universe, drawing inspiration from classic westerns and bounty hunter films. That approach of having the stand-alone Anthology films each exploring a different genre to the main trilogy could actually make for some great storytelling without the yearly release schedule giving fans Star Wars fatigue.

And Schmoes go on to add that this genre-diverse plan will continue for a still unannounced third Anthology film to hit in 2020, as they claim that it will be much more “mythological and spiritual” based, perhaps exploring the origins of Master Yoda, which has been a closely guarded secret until now.

Now obviously you have to take all these claims with a Sarlacc pit of salt, but you have to admit that there’s a certain kind of sensible creative logic on display here. Han and Fett are two of Star Wars’ most popular characters and pitting them against each other in a contest that already has narrative precedent is sure to put butts in cinema seats. What’s more, it could actually be good! Certainly a much better idea than just blithely unpacking – and in the case of Fett, demystifying – their origin stories, if you ask me.

Similarly, I’m less keen on a Yoda origin story. He’s a great little support character who has certainly earned his place in the pop culture pantheon, but do I really want to see him lead a movie? I mean, a wise old Yoda sounds all sage-like when dropping nuggets in his trademark garbled language, but can you imagine a gawky teenage Yoda doing the same thing for two hours? Not, I think.

As for the 2nd Anthology film, irrespective of whether Vaughn (my personal pick!), Favreau or somebody else gets the gig, it will probably be some time until we hear an official confirmation as that film is only scheduled for 2018.
