Director Dean Israelite talks POWER RANGERS – Fun but grounded

You cast your mind back to the age of Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers, and you’d realise that for all the high-octane energy, massive monsters and scheduled karate on show, Power Rangers was a pretty goofy show.

And really, there’s nothing wrong with that. Even though every character used the dance moves of an entire trilogy of Step Up movies just to give directions to random passer-bys, Power Rangers was some silly fun. And that’s something that director Dean Israelite plans to cash in on with the upcoming film based on those teenagers with attitude. But it’ll be an up to date adaptation as he explained:

PowerRangers

I read the script and was really surprised by it and thought there was a really cool, contemporary, mature but still playful, buoyant and fun take on the material, and was updated in a really interesting way. It had this wonderful character that’s essential to going on a fantastic adventure.

At the same time, that ridiculousness needs to be grounded. And that’s what Israelite plans to do, once he makes certain the film is fun first:

Oh, yes, it needs to be completely playful, and it needs to be really fun and funny. But like Project Almanac, I hope it’s going to feel very grounded at the same time, and very contemporary and have a real edge to it, and a real gut to it. So I think it’s going to be a fun, joyful [movie] but one that feels completely grounded in a real world, with real characters going through real things.

Being wary of the silliness of a project, can actually be beneficial. Because it’s kind of admirable to see such a film not only embrace its roots, but to run with it and own it. And Power Rangers will need to pick up the pace, as the film is still scheduled for a January 2017 release.
