I like to think of myself as decently built. I go to gym, I work out, and I eat reasonably well in an effort to never turn into Kervyn’s final form. So when I watch a trailer like the one for Southpaw my mind is blown by the discipline and dedication an actor like Jake Gyllenhaal must obviously have. If you just compare his stature in his last movie Nightcrawler to Southpaw you would think it was a different person entirely. I mean he’s gone and done a full Christian Bale on us (for those not in the know Bale is famous for putting on heaps of weight and losing it in record time for roles like The Machinist, Batman and The Fighter).

Putting aside Gyllenhaal’s transformation in Southpaw (southpaw is a term used for the position a left-handed sportsman adopts for their stance) the movie looks very dark and very intense. The story follows Gyllenhaal’s tragic demise after the death of his wife, something it would seem he blames himself for. His attempts to regain his lost glory and the love of his daughter, bring him to the training gym of Forest Whitaker, a famous boxing coach. Interestingly the lead role was originally going to be for Eminem who contributes to the soundtrack. Really not sure I can imagine him in the role! Have a watch of the trailer and see what you think.

Intense right? We all know that Gyllenhaal is a superb actor after almost winning the Oscar for Nightcrawler but this time instead of turning on the crazy to full-blown whack we have the chance to see him in a very physical and emotional role.

Southpaw is directed by Training Day‘s Antoine Fuqua and also stars Rachel McAdams, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, Rita Ora and Victor Ortiz and is set to land in the ring on 24 July.
