Midweek Movie Mouth-Off: What’s your favourite Stephen King movie adaptation?

Stephen King is a prolific author, and he’s had more than his fair share of books adapted for movies and TV – the latest adaptation on the cards being The Stand, which might even be adapted for both. To list but a fraction, there’s Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, Carrie, The Shining, Dreamcatcher, Stand By Me, Cujo and even the slightly more obscure ones like Apt Pupil or Dolores Claiborne.

Now, I’m not asking which one you think stuck closest to the source material, or even which ones made the right book-to-movie changes. That might be what made it the “best” adaptation, but that might not be which one you liked the most. I loved the adaptation of The Stand, even if it was so 80’s it was painful and the special effects were kinda cheesy, it still made a damn good miniseries, which is why I’m so keen that they have another go at it.

Even if you haven’t read the books, you’ve probably seen at least one of his works on screen (here’s a full list if you need help). Which one is your favourite?

Looking at that list makes me realise just how many of his books I’ve read. I’ve only watched Shawshank Redemption, Running Man & the Carrie remake though.

Anybody else remember the Langoliers mini-series? That shit was crazy tense! Utterly ridiculous now, but back then it had you biting your nails like crazy

The 1997 adaption of The Shining is what got me into Stephen King, and is still my favourite to this day, pure awesomeness!

For me it’s probably a toss-up between The Green Mile and The Shawshank Redemption – loved both the books and the movies.

I’ll go left of field and say Maximum Overdrive. Yes, it’s actually quite bad, but was King’s directorial debut. Pity he did all that cocaine while filming…

Cat’s Eye was also a fun anthology based on his concepts.

I’d have to say probably The Mist. The ending of the movie, man, talk about depressing!

The short story’s ending was worse. It just ended…no climax…nothing.

The lawnmower man. Hahahaha. Just kidding. I’d have to say it would be between Shawshank and the Mist. I could easily see the Mist becoming a tv series.
