NBC cancels HANNIBAL, but there's still hope

Not content with cancelling my second favourite show on the network, Constantine, NBC have issued an early cancellation announcement for my favourite – Hannibal. The show recently began airing its third season and is three episodes into its thirteen episode (and now final) season, however the remaining episodes will continue to air on the network at it’s regular Thursday evening time slot.

For those of you that haven’t watched the show, firstly we’re not friends – I don’t even like whatever pet you own. Secondly, it revolves around the relationship between troubled FBI criminal profiler Will Graham (Hugh Dancy) and his psychiatrist Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen), himself a highly-intelligent, manipulative, cannibalistic serial-killer, while Graham pursues those of a similar nature and battles with his own internal demons.

While the show has received critical praise for its intellectual and artistic approach to the dark subject matter, both in its visual style and its dialogue, it’s always struggled with poor ratings on a network best known for it’s much lighter fare and reality TV shows; with the subsequent threat of cancellation always looming. Well, the hammer has finally fallen.

But all is not lost as production company Dino De Laurentiis Co. are actively shopping the show around to other networks in the hope that one of them will step up to the dinner party. The early cancellation announcement should play into their favour in this regard as it would aid with network negotiations and make it easier to keep its high-profile cast, which also includes the likes of Gillian Anderson, Laurence Fishburne and Caroline Dhavernas, on board.

Show runner Bryan Fuller has confirmed previously that he’s planned a complete six season arc for the show and I really hope another network jumps on this because it’s something I’d love to see; and so would Nick, it’s his go-to show for recipes and cooking tips. How about you?
