And here we go again. You would think that a concept as perfectly cinematic as the video game adventures of treasure hunter Nathan Drake in the Uncharted game series would be such an easy thing to translate the big screen, but clearly that thought would be wrong. Seven years after it was first announced that a feature film adaptation of the best-selling Playstation game was being developed, we are once again back to square one as Heroic Hollywood is reporting that director Seth Gordon (Horrible Bosses, Identity Thief) has now exited the project.

Gordon was of course the replacement for Neil Burger (Limitless, Divergent) who also dropped out. Burger, in turn, was the replacement for David O. Russell, who worked for a long time with actor Mark Wahlberg in developing the movie before both men also left and the whole project got stuck in the development hell that it seemingly finds itself once again. There has also been a slew of writers that have taken a crack at this – the latest being Mark Boal (Zero Dark Thirty, The Hurt Locker) – with none of them getting the job done it seems.

As for the reason for Gordon’s departure, initial reports were stating that the director walked due to Sony head Tom Rothman demanding severe budget cuts for the film – reportedly he wanted something budget-wise in the vein of the Resident Evil movies, rather than the Indiana Jones-type flick that Gordon wanted. However, i09, who confirmed Gordon’s departure, are claiming that this is not the case at all. Their source states that the film is “simply going in a new direction.” As to what that means, they have no idea, but hopefully it means that somebody at Sony is finally going to start listening to the perfectly cast Nathan Fillion’s pleas to play Drake on-screen.

Whatever happens, at least we know we can already get a proper big-budget blockbuster movie experience from the “Uncharted” games themselves.
