No, you didn’t have a bad dream after eating some bad shrimp; a sequel to the Ivan Reitman directed 1988 comedy Twins is indeed in the works. The original film starred the odd couple pairing of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito as the titular test-tube siblings, and may have have been a middling success critically, but was a gigantic smash hit at the box office making $216 million off a $18 million budget. Normally those kinds of figures mean sequel, and that was no different in this case. It’s just taken a bit of time.

Announced in 2012, Triplets would see Schwarzenegger and DeVito teaming up with funnyman Eddie Murphy as a third long-lost brother. Writer-actor Josh Gad ( Jobs, Frozen) was tapped to write the screenplay, as well as to star as Schwarzenegger’s son (the gag was that Gad looks like DeVito, while DeVito has a son that looks like Arnie), but then the project was put on hold.

But in a recent interview on the Howard Stern Show (via /Film), Arnie gave an update on the project saying that everybody is now on-board with the project.

“Eddie Murphy loves the idea. Danny DeVito and I had lunch with Eddie Murphy over at my house, and we talked about the thing, and we were laughing and laughing the whole meal through because it was such a funny idea. And of course, who wouldn’t like it.”

Arnie also gave a more detailed synopsis for the movie’s premise:

“Now we are talking about a sequel, where we find out at the funeral of our mother, that when we read the will, that there’s three of us. Eddie Murphy is going to be the third one and so they go, ‘How did that happen? There’s an African American coming in here and all of a sudden he’s our brother’. So we go to do the research but he can only get the money if we find him, so now we have to get him involved.”

I have to admit though, I’m nowhere near as enthusiastic about this as the Governator is. His return to movies has not been a wholly good one, Danny DeVito can sometimes be grating and I’ve yet to actually see Eddie Murphy be genuinely funny this century. My hope lies in Gad, who has proven to be a fairly solid entertainer, and hopefully that comes through in the script. A script that is apparently very close to being done.

“They have a script but it has to be, like most scripts, fine-tuned. And so they are fine tuning it right now.”

Whether the studio actually takes it past the fine-tuning phase this time around is still up in the air though, but based on how long this one’s been in development I don’t expect to see anything concrete happening anytime soon.

Have you seen the 80’s?! Sensible decision making was not very popular back then!

But if this is successful then he’ll probably try making a sequel to that one where he’s pregnant. Nobody wants that.

How about one where he is pregnant and an undercover cop working as a kindergarten teacher!
