Midweek Movie Mouth-off: your favourite fan theory

I got thinking about fan-made theories as I watched Inception for something like the fourth time this weekend (as an aside that movie is still excellent, easily in my top ten). I love a good conspiracy theory about plot points and details in a movie or a TV show. Granted, sometimes fan-made theories run more into the realm of “what are you smoking?” than “wow, that makes so much sense”, but still it’s fun to think and debate about them. One of my favourite fan-theories is about Cobb’s totem. Spoilers ahead, if you haven’t seen Inception yet, then skip the next paragraph. Also, seriously you haven’t seen Inception yet? What’s wrong with you?

See, the movie implies that his totem is the spinning top, even though you know it was his wife’s, you see him using it all the time. But, Cobb’s totem is actually his wedding ring. When you know they’re in a dream, he’s wearing it, and when you see him out of a dream, he’s not. It’s a simple detail, but it settles the way the movie ends, because then it doesn’t matter whether the top carries on spinning or not when he’s finally home, because it won’t show the audience (or Cobb) that he’s out the dream. You can only briefly glimpse it, but in the final scene, he’s not wearing his ring.

So what’s your favourite theory about a movie or show that you’ve heard, or come up with?

This one always made sense to me – The scene in Pulp Fiction where Uma Thurman’s character tells John Travolta’s character of a TV show she was in is actually Kill Bill.

Yeah, that’s just too spot on to be a coincidence.

I like the difference between Donnie Darko and its director’s cut. The former suggests that Donnie is slowly going mad and seeing an imaginary costumed rabbit. But the latter suggests he lapsed into a separate time line and the rabbit is a guide to help him resolve the anomaly. But though both movies drop hints to either side, neither are explicitly confirmed.

The ending of The Thing is also interesting. I fully grasp the argument that Child was the alien, but it could have also been McCready. He could have fiddled with the blood samples and leading the fight against the invaders also removed him from suspicion. It was also never confirmed that the torn jacket of his that was found was really a plant.

The idea that the entirety of Grease is an elaborate fantasy by Sandy as she is busy drowning has a lot of appeal…

Finally, though I’m not a Star Wars fan, I like the idea that R2D2 may be the most powerful and influential character in the universe. He does show up in an amazing number of places just at the right time.
