Can you smell what The Rock is cooking? Yup, his big movie finally arrived, along with a rude bear and something about Hollywood. But those dinosaurs still rule…

Jurassic World is simply destroying all before it. Though it has slid a little in the U.S., it still earned over half a billion dollars there and even more globally. That takes its total to over $1.2 billion, making it not only the biggest movie of the year, but one of the top five all-time earners.

Debuting in second place is the earthquake thriller San Andreas. While definitely not bad at all for Dwayne Johnson’s bank account and reputation, it was a modest hit – making just under $150 million in the U.S. Yup, that’s what goes for ‘modest’ these days – the film apparently cost $110 million to make.

Slipping down one spot to third is Inside Out, the new Pixar movie which also bumped Jurassic World off the U.S. top spot. It had a great opening – Pixar’s second-best – but is as yet only the 12th best earners for the animation studio. At the moment it is pacing slightly better than Up, Pixar’s third-most successful film.

Arriving on the charts at number four is Ted 2, the sequel about Seth McFarlane’s rude bear. It opened weaker than the first movie and might not end up as big a success, though Ted 2 should outperform the flop A Million Ways to Die in the West.

Spy, the farce about the world of spooks, drops down to fifth, but is still going strong. It already surpassed Melissa McCarthy’s flop, Tammy, making this the strongest film in which she is the feature lead.

At number six is the debut of Hollywood In My Huis, an Afrikaans teenage comedy about a girl who wants to recreate her Matric ball as a red carpet event, as well as hook up with the school’s tennis champion. Yet again the Afrikaans-language movies are showing their dominance in the local charts – we’re halfway through the year and as yet not a single other local movie has made it to the top 10.

Pitch Perfect 2 is still going strong, despite falling three spots this past weekend. But it has been dominating and is the last of the older blockbusters slowly dropping out of the top 10.

Pitch Perfect 2

Jason Statham is already starring in Spy, but audiences can’t get enough. His action film Wild Card is still charting, but has dropped two spots to number eight.

The dramady 5 Flights Up also dropped two spots to ninth, no doubt supported by older audiences feeling a bit alienated by the loud and crazy offerings on the rest of the chart.

And at tenth is Insidious: Chapter 3, also dropping two spots since last week. That means you should get your horror fix in soon before this drops out of the charts and soon out of circulation.

Leaving the Top 10 this week are Mad Max: Fury Road, Treurgrond and Avengers: Age of Ultron.

That means we have a new top earner: Jurassic World and its R27 million.
