It seems that whenever somebody gets an idea in Hollywood for a big blockbuster, somebody else seemingly gets the exact same one! This is has led to thematic rivalries like Volcano vs Dante’s Peak, Armageddon vs Deep Impact, The Prestige vs The Illusionist, The Matrix vs The 13th Floor and of course, who can forget the classic battle between Thrashin’ and Gleaming the Cube…….. Okay, so apparently everybody can forget both those films except me.

The point is that this tradition is still alive today, and in 2014 it the was the Battle of Movies About Terrorists Taking Over the White House as Roland Emmerich’s White House Down faced off against Antoine Fuqua’s Olympus Has Fallen. Of the two, everybody has their personal pick, but for me it was the latter, with its intense R-rated action and wry “take no crap” hero, that ended up the winner. And the box office receipts seemingly agreed with me, which is of course why we’re getting a sequel now.

London Has Fallen now sees Gerard Butler’s Secret Service Agent Mike Banning hopping over the pond to England to protect Aaron Eckhart’s best bro President during the funeral for the British Prime Minister. Of course those dastardly ever-present terrorists seize this opportunity to get up to no good again, forcing Banning to become go all London Blitz on them with some help from Charlotte Riley’s local MI-6 agent.

Fuqua hands over directing duties to the less well-known Babak Nafaji (Snabba Cash II) for this sequel, but the newcomer seems to be sticking to the formula laid out by his predecessor. Time will tell if that’s a good thing or not.

The visceral intensity springs from a timely premise: after the British Prime Minister passes away, his funeral becomes a target of a terrorist organization to destroy some of the world’s most powerful leaders, devastate the British capital, and unleash a terrifying vision of the future. The only hope of stopping it rests on the shoulders of the President of the United States (Aaron Eckhart) and his formidable Secret Service head (Gerard Butler), and an English MI-6 agent (Charlotte Riley) who rightly trusts no one.

London Has Fallen also stars Morgan Freeman, Angela Basset, Melissa Leo, Radha Mitchell, Robert Forster and Jackie Earl Haley. After being delayed from its original October 2015 date (to avoid going head to head with Ridley Scott’s The Martian and Robert Zemeckis’ The Walk), it is now scheduled for release on January 22, 2016.
