The fourth of July. Unlike every other weekend at the US box office, the July 4 Memorial Day weekend is usually the scene of some truly stupendous earning potential. After all, with an entire nation on holiday, this is the three day pass where summer tentpole movies were born.

Only this weekend, it looks like the Terminator franchise has been…terminated. Jurassic World and Pixar’s Inside Out once again dominated in first and second place respectively, leaving Terminator: Genisys and Magic Mike XXL to battle it out for scraps.

At third place with an opening domestic weekend of $28.7 million, Terminator Genisys pretty much flopped. That’s a total that’s way behind previous Terminator flicks, with Terminator: Salvation still making $42 million on opening weekend in 2009 and Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines earning over $44 million in 2003.

It’s not all doom and gloom however. Overseas, Terminator: Phil Collins Must Die has made over $85.5 million from 44 foreign markets, combining for a grand total of $129.6 million so far. With a  budget of $155 million, Genisys will need to find some legs in order to keep the Terminator franchise alive.

Here’s how the rest of the North American box office did:

TerminatorGenisys-TR-16736R

  • Jurassic World – $43.8 Million
  • Inside Out – $30.1 Million
  • Terminator Genesys – $28.7 Million
  • Magic Mike XXL – $11.6 Million
  • Ted 2 – $11 Million
  • Max – $6.6 Million
  • Spy – $5.5 Million
  • San Andreas – $3 Million
  • Me, Earl and the Dying Girl – $1.3 Million
  • Dope – $1 Million

Top ten departures this week include Mad Max: Fury Road, Insidious Chapter 3 and Avengers: Age of Ultron. It may have started out slow, but one of the best action movies of the year has hit the nitro to be a critical success. After an eight-week run in the US top ten, Mad Max: Fury Road has earned a rather shiny and chrome international haul of over $358 million so far.

Meanwhile, the latest Insidious flick fizzled out with $88.2 million, way behind the first sequel which made over $161.9 million in 2013 and the original flick’s $97 million haul in 2011. The big winner here of course, is the first Avengers sequel. Avengers: Age of Ultron earned over $1.3 billion worldwide after a ten week run in the US box office.

That may be a bit behind the first film’s 2012 box office take of over $1.5 billion, but I doubt Disney will be crying themselves to sleep over this fact.
