As excited as I am for new episodes in the Star Wars universe, it’s the spin-offs that really get my engine revving. There’s already work being done on several of these flicks, which will feature characters such as Boba Fett in the spotlight.

And hopefully, my script for Star Wars: Jar Jar Electric Bigaloo 2 will finally be approved. But not before the other spin-off, which will feature a certain rogue and Kessel run expert striking out on his own. Yes folks, Han Solo is getting his own movie.

The official Star Wars website has confirmed that Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the directors of The Lego Movie, will direct the Hutt-stabbing smuggler in a Star Wars Anthology movie slated for release on May 25, 2018.

The film “focuses on how young Han Solo became the smuggler, thief, and scoundrel whom Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi first encountered in the cantina at Mos Eisley.”

“This is the first film we’ve worked on that seems like a good idea to begin with,” Lord and Miller said in a press statement.

We promise to take risks, to give the audience a fresh experience, and we pledge ourselves to be faithful stewards of these characters who mean so much to us. This is a dream come true for us. And not the kind of dream where you’re late for work and all your clothes are made of pudding, but the kind of dream where you get to make a film with some of the greatest characters ever, in a film franchise you’ve loved since before you can remember having dreams at all.

The Star Wars line-up is starting to look busy now, as Disney starts to make that $4 billion investment work for them. This year already sees Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One in 2016 and the 2017 release of Star Wars Episode VIII.

The Han Solo flick will feature a script from Lawrence “Empire Strikes Back” Kasdan and his son Jon Kasdan. “We’re so excited to be working with Chris and Phil, who will bring a fresh new dimension to the Star Wars universe,” said both Kasdans. “They’re two of the smartest, funniest and most original filmmakers around, and the ideal choice to tell the story of Han Solo, one of the coolest characters in the galaxy.”

Honestly, I’m super-happy over this. I’ve always enjoyed Star Wars when it wasn’t solely focused on the Jedi and the Sith, as the various other denizens of that galaxy make for a more fascinating story. And let’s be honest: Han Solo was always the coolest character around in the old trilogy. Everybody wanted to be him. Now to find an actor who can actually carry such a film.

Now somebody get to work on making a Rebel Alliance flick about the unsung hero of the Rebellion, Porkins.

Chris Pratt could fit the role pretty well, he does the everyman’s man gig perfectly.
