Looks like Darryn’s steamy Aunt May fan-fiction may just be getting a whole lot less disconcerting soon. That would be if a recent report by Variety is confirmed that Marvel and Sony are looking at Oscar-winning actress Marisa Tomei (The Wrestler, My Cousin Vinny) to play Peter Parker/Spider-Man’s Aunt May in the upcoming new Spider-Man movie. Neither studio have officially verified this news though, and Variety’s sources also don’t know how far along the deal-making process is, so while this seems likely, don’t accept it as hard fact quite yet.

If true though, Tomei’s casting would certainly be a big change from the grey-haired and/or matronly appearance that Spidey’s legal guardian has traditionally employed in the comic books and movies for years – though Sally Fields’ feisty turn as May in The Amazing Spider-Man 1 & 2 was already starting to deviate from the norm.

And before you start ranting about how Tomei is too young and attractive to play Aunt May, please note that the actress is actually 50-years old – yep, those are some good genes! – which would make her pretty age-appropriate to play the parental figure to recently cast 19-year old Tom Holland as Peter Parker. The fact that Holland will actually be playing the character even younger at approximately 16-years old makes the casting of Aunt Tomei (sorry) even more appropriate.

And for the 3 of you out there who don’t know, traditionally Peter Parker is taken in by his Uncle Ben and Aunt May after his parents were killed because they were spies because they were doing some crazy scientific experiments because they were robots CAN WE JUST STOP ALL THIS RETCONNING NOW, MARVEL?! in an accident. When Uncle Ben famously died when Peter Parker – under the guise of Spider-Man – fails to stop a common thief, May raises the young man on his own.

Marvel Studios bigwig Kevin Feige recently hinted that the upcoming Spider-Man movie would have a “John Hughes film” feel to it, and that we would be seeing more of the familial soap opera stuff – like Spidey always trying to not let May discover his secret identity – that made the comic so fun.

While it is believed that Holland will be making his on-screen debut in the MCU as Peter Parker in next year’s Captain America: Civil War, if Tomei officially gets the gig she would more than likely only be appearing in the 2017 standalone Spider-Man movie directed by Jon Watts (Cop Car). Marvel and Sony are reportedly still looking for a screenwriter for the movie.
