Wesley Snipes talks about the future of BLADE; confirms talks with Marvel

Comic-Con is here! Which means tons of geeky news is heading your way for the next few days, and down in the secret The Movies bunker Kervyn and Darryn are running around in circles totes fangirling – giggling, jazz hands, the works. OMG you guys, yes that’s amazing! Help. Please make them stop. What? No, I didn’t say anything. Please.

Another person not wanting to talk about something comic book related was Wesley Snipes, who’s at Comic-Con promoting his new TV series – The Player – which revolves around a former spy (Snipes) working as a security expert in Las Vegas. No really. While at their panel he specifically said “I just hope that we don’t have all the questions centered around if I’m going to do Blade Four or not.” So, of course, Deadline asked him about Blade – and Snipes had a bit to say about the character.

DEADLINE: Well, will you be bringing the vampire hunter back?

The project is controlled by Marvel and we did have a really productive and a wonderful meeting and we discussed a number of things. I don’t know where it’s on their schedule at this point, that hasn’t been decided. I guess it’s still up in the air.

DEADLINE: Could we see you going the ever expanding Marvel Universe in another way?

That’s a possibility too. I’ve always been a fan of these pieces and adaptations and I’d be nice to be a part of the family again. But if we don’t to a Blade 4 or something else with Marvel, we’ll do something else. We have some other characters and some other concepts that are going to be just as exciting and hopefully just as successful. The first season of The Player will be interesting as well because we have drama and action, which is what I like. It gives me a chance to do a number of different things.

I’d love to see Blade make an appearance in the Marvel shared universe as the character is very different, and deals with very different situations and foes, compared to any of the other current heroes. It’s also a gateway to the horror-related side of the Marvel universe, although it might be too soon to venture there as they’ve just kicked off the cosmic side with Guardians of the Galaxy and are broaching the quantum-techno-mumbo-jumbo-sorcery side with Doctor Strange (and possibly Ant-Man?).

Diversity is another hot topic in superhero movies, and Deadline also asked him his thoughts on that.

DEADLINE: Marvel has the Black Panther movie moving forward and the Falcon character has become part of the Captain America and Avengers franchises, do you think the tide is turning to finally have more African-American superheroes?

I don’t know. It’s takes more than one situation to make it a trend. One wouldn’t qualify it as a trend or a real shift in the tides yet. We’ll have to see how well the films do and how well the characters are presented. Clearly there’s an audience for it, both domestically and internationally. And I know that only a few guys can do this, so it’s kind of hard. Not everybody can do the comic book adaptation thing and make it believable. It is challenging.

I’ll say it again, I’d love to see him come back, as the original Blade is still one of my favourite Marvel-related movies. He’d also go quite nicely with that other forgotten Marvel superhero, Ghost Rider (just throwing that out there). What do you think?

The first one wasn’t that bad. The second one… well… how can I put this delicately… it was a giant steaming pile of crap.

You are insulting BAD by calling the second one bad!

I totally forgot about him when it came to picking a Black Panther. If not Blade, he could have done a good Panther. I hope for another Blade movie, whether part of the larger universe or not.
