Besides for that fanboy-tastic Batman v Superman trailer, the other big franchise trailer that saw heroes facing off against each other and totally brought the house down in Comic-Con’s Hall H was Fox’s footage for X-Men: Apocalypse. It technically wasn’t an actual trailer, but merely a collection of scenes they’ve already shot in the movie’s current 5-weeks of shooting, which is why Fox naturally didn’t make it available online. So of course it leaked out. And now you can check it out below in its grainy, skewed angle glory, but best hurry before it gets pulled down!

I believe the technical term is “SHEEEEEYYYIT!” According to director Bryan Singer those scenes must still go through some post production, but I’ll be damned if that isn’t looking spectacular already. I love the design of Oscar Isaac as Apocalypse as it clearly hearkens back to his comic book look, but is a bit more Egyptian and ancient and less cartoony. Two niggles though: 1) Isaac is a fantastic actor and based on what we hear and see here, he will be a damn intimidating villain. However I am really missing the distinct inhumanly deep bass-rumble voice that was used for Apocalypse in the classic 90’s cartoon and how I’ve heard him in my head ever since. And 2) I need my Apocalypse to tower over everybody else. He can’t look like a normal person. Apocalypse does have size-changing powers though, so maybe he employs them later.

Other than that, there’s a real sinister tone here that I love, and the new characters like Storm and Jubilee look like they’ve stepped right off the comic book page. Also, leave it up to Magneto to get the coolest line by far in the trailer!

And if that trailer was already pulled by the time you read this and thus have no idea what I’ve been talking about for the last two paragraphs though, then check out /Film for a great beat for beat description of the trailer.

The only other thing that was shown that was not aired was at the start of the official panel for the movie, where an old clip was shown of Bryan Singer giving a very a young Hugh Jackman the role of Wolverine in the first X-Men movie – a role that would change his life, and probably change the movies forever. Soon after that was shown, the panel itself kicked off and you can watch it in its entirety below,

For those of you that don’t want to watch all 24 minutes of that, the intriguing plot details that were revealed are that the movie takes place 10 years after the events of Days of Future Past, and thanks to the public actions of Jennifer Lawrence’s Mystique to stop Michael Fassbender’s Magneto, the world has mostly come to accept mutants, with cults even springing up everywhere in which they are worshiped. Since the incident, Magneto has “hung up his cape” as a villain and now has a family of his own. But Apocalypse – who appears to have the ability to control mutants – shows up to mess up this peaceful world. According to Isaac, “This world we have is not the world it should have been. God wakes up and says that it has to change.” Oooooh.

During the panel, Hugh Jackman also confirmed that the next Wolverine solo movie will indeed be his last. Commenting on the above mentioned footage of him getting the Wolverine gig, he exclaimed that he couldn’t believe how young he looked there. Then proceeded to drop this huge teaser: “Just three words for you: Old Man Logan… read into that what you will”.

Before the panel wrapped up, Bryan Singer also revealed the movie’s first poster, which also gives a stylistic look at Oscar Isaac as the movie’s titular villain.
