Constantine

The universe is a cruel, cruel place. And never is this cruelty displayed more openly than when our favourite TV shows get cancelled while Big Brother gets another season. Such was the case for Constantine, NBC’s adaptation of the fan favourite comic book that saw Matt Ryan as the titular magic man John Constantine, as he waged a war against the forces of Evil on a weekly basis.

The show’s cancellation was especially infuriating because Ryan was instantly a revelation in the role, banishing all memories of Keanu Reeves’ big screen version of the character to the underworld. To see him have to give up the role so soon was galling. But there may just be hope yet for him to once again don the trademark trenchcoat.

You may recall back when the show was on the verge of cancellation and the creators started shopping around to other networks to find it a home, many hoped that CW, home to a few of the biggest series also based on DC Comics properties, would be that refuge. Alas it was not to be. And to add insult to injury, Stephen Amell, star of CW’s Arrow, took it one step further to reveal that before the plug got pulled there had been talks at one stage of perhaps having Arrow crossover with Constantine as a way of introducing more supernatural elements into the usually fairly grounded show. And that was sadly that, right?

Not quite, because during an IGN interview with Amell, co-star Emily Bett Rickards and executive producer Wendy Mericle at Comic-Con, it was revealed that the idea is still on the table.

Here’s the relevant quote for those of you who don’t want to watch the whole video:

“Yeah, we really want to do it,” said Mericle. “It’s something we’ve been talking to DC about and it’s just a question of some political things, but also the actor’s schedule. We’re trying to work it out, but we don’t know 100 percent if it’s going to happen.”

“Fingers crossed,” added Amell.

“But we’re really optimistic and we would love to have him. It would be really exciting,” said Mericle.

Damn right, it would be exciting! Arrow‘s recent season 3 had some highlights, but overall it was a bit meh. But bringing Matt Ryan to school Oliver Queen and friends on all things mystical, while of course being a right bastard about it, would have me glued to my screens for season 4. So come on, CW! Do whatever hocus pocus it is that you need to do, and make this a reality!

Watching Ollie deal with snarky Constantine would be funnier than watching him deal with Barry’s enthusiasm.
