Midweek Movie Mouth-Off: Good idea, bad execution

There’s nothing wrong with an ambitious movie, as long as it’s done right. Unfortunately, there are plenty of movies that have had incredibly good ideas when it comes to the premise, but the end result just ends up falling flat. Maybe the ideas weren’t fleshed out enough, maybe the casting was wrong, or maybe the movie suffered from some poor scripting choices or bad direction.

For me, Jupiter Ascending fell squarely into this category. There was a lot of potential packed into that movie, and it could have been great. Instead, it ended up being a predictable, uncreative, muddled mess with too much plot and some seriously bland acting. At least it was visually pretty, but also pretty boring. In the hands of a different director, with some serious script edits, it could have been a lot more than what we ended up with.

So which movie did you think had an excellent idea, but failed to deliver?

The Lazarus Effect had the potential to be a really good movie, but then they went for the “Humans only use 10% of their brain” explanation.

The movie grabbed my attention when they mentioned something about “some doors should not be opened”. They should have worked with that and made it that they brought something else back when they tried to resurrect her.

Yup – completely agree. Such potential there… Sadly all unreached. Ended up being a moving trying to mimic a bunch of other movies… And not particularly cleverly.

Lucy. It had everything going for it, but was just filled to the brim with incredibly stupid nonsensical pseudo-science claptrap. I’ve got no problem suspending disbelief, but I’m not prepared to give myself a concussion to get to that state.

There’s a movie from a few years ago called Exam. Great idea, but let down by a weak conclusion and actors trying to punch way above their weight class.
