Horror movies don’t age well. What is frightening today is laughable tomorrow, with many a horror flick from the past being downright tame by the standards of today. Hell, I’d bet that a few years from now, we’ll be able to look back and laugh at Hostel, instead of vomiting everywhere after watching that torture porn flick.

But one movie that is still creepy, almost a hundred freakin’ years since it was made? F.W. Murnau’s Nosferatu, a 1922 silent film that was ahead of its time, and introduced the world to vampires.

Nosferatu (1)

According to Deadline, Robert “The Witch” Eggers will direct the flick, which has been described as “a visceral adaptation of F.W. Murnau’s 1922 silent film masterpiece that brings the horrific vampire of Eastern European folklore back to the screen.” So no shiny shirtless abdominal muscles then.

Nosferatu was creepy thanks to that silent film approach, while the make-up for the time made the dreaded vampire Count Orlock that much creepier thanks to actor Max Shreck flexing some thespian muscle to deliver a supernatural performance.

Nosferatu (2)

Eggers’ will also write the remake, which will be produced by The Witch and Beginners producers Jay Van Hoy & Lars Knudsen. Eggers’ The Witch flick has yet to even release a trailer but art circuit impressions of the film, which deals with a 17th Century New England family which is beset by black magic, are glowing to say the least.

It’s been long enough to remake the movie at this point. Hell, it’s been 15 years since Shadow Of The Vampire, a movie about the making of Nosferatu, which starred Willem Dafoe as the horrid Count Orlock. It’s an intriguing development, and Eggers seems like the right fit for the project.
