Midweek Movie Mouth-Off: the classic movies of our generation

We all know what makes a classic movie: it has to be timeless, constantly re-watchable and basically universally adored. Also, it generally has to be old. I’m not even going as far back as classic-classic movies like Citizen Kane, Gone with the Wind or Casablanca. Looking at your more “modern” classic movies like The Godfather trilogy, the original Star Wars trilogy, heck even movies like Jaws, none of them are more recent than the 90’s.

Sure, post-2000 we’ve churned out quite a lot of good movies, but which of these are going to be the classics of the millennial generation? I would have to go with The Lord of the Rings trilogy. I might not have enjoyed them that much personally, but based on pure audience popularity, critic ratings, and the fact that they were done so well the first time that they haven’t been rebooted yet, means that in all likelihood they will stand the test of time and be as good 30 years from now as they were when they first hit the cinemas. And no, The Hobbit trilogy doesn’t count as a reboot, that’s more like the Star Wars prequels (except, you know, actually decent).

So, ignoring the fact that I just said I didn’t enjoy The Lord of the Rings (that’s not this week’s topic!), I’d like to hear from you. From Avatar to Zoolander and everything in between, which movie do you think will be considered a classic of our generation?

On the very recent front, Nightstalker and Whiplash were magnificent.

I reckon Christopher Nolan’s movies will still be watched for a long time in the future.

Some of my post 2000 favourites which are instant classics imo (ie I can always re-watch):

    Nolan-ology – Memento, Inception
    Oldboy (2003)
    Donnie Darko
Gladiator (I know but I have a soft spot for it)
    City of God
Requiem for a Dream (Watched this again recently, don’t think I can watch it again in my lifetime but still brilliant)

    Mystic River
    There Will Be Blood
    Sexy Beast
    No Country For Old Men
Pitch Black – because it’s MY list
    Lord of War
    Snatch
    Four Lions
    Drive
    District 9
    Bullhead
    Black Hawk Down
    30 Days of Night
    The Evil Dead
    Blue Caprice
    The Master

Clearly I am easy to please but I also know what I love and that is a pretty broad-appeal list even though the late 80’s and 90’s were my favorite movie era
