Married with Children

Love and Marriage – it’s an institute you can’t disparage. But that, as every kid of the Eighties knows, is not true. Frank Sinatra’s lament on the wonders of the married life were put to a ironic contrast by the show that used his song as its title. Yes, things rarely got as dysfunctional as in the brilliant black comedy Married… With Children.

The series was a game changer, throwing the sentimental sitcoms of the era on their ear. The world learned more about human beings in a family unit through this show than such syrup-soaked nonsense as Family Ties or Growing Pains. Need proof? Barely anyone still remembers that Michael J. Fox was Alex Keaton or that Kirk Cameron starred in anything of note. But despite Modern Family, Sons of Anarchy and Vacation, everyone above the age of thirty remembers that Ed O’Neill, Katey Sagal and Christina Applegate were part of the dysfunctional Bundy clan.

David Faustino, who played the son Bud, has had a less illustrious career. But he is there for the fans, having revealed that a Married… With Children spin-off is in the works. Sony, the studio behind this, has denied it, but the plan is apparently to have a pilot starring the old cast and then create a spin-off show.

Faustino went on to say that the original cast, including Christina Applegate, was game to return. “The whole cast, including Christina, is down to do little bits in it,” he said. “The idea would be a pilot for a spinoff. That’s all I can say right now. It involves me and few other people.”

Would that include their neighbour, Marcy, played by Amanda Bearse? She has not seen eye-to-eye with O’Neill and Faustino for a long time.

But will this work? Married… With Children is a throwback to a simpler time. Today’s sets without fixed cameras and live studio audiences is a different breed. So is the humour: we’ve already seen other shows go after Married‘s territory, notably the underrated Unhappily Ever After. Could Married come back as fresh and interesting? Would the format resemble Modern Family, except replacing all the feel-good moments with loads of cynicism and back-stabbing?

Actually, I’d watch that. Modern Family… With Children. It could get really twisted.
