When Johnny Depp gets into character and make-up, the results are usually whimsical to say the least. After all, such lengthy sitdowns in the make-up trailer have resulted in him bringing to life characters such as Edward Scissorhands, Jack Sparrow and a particularly mental Mad Hatter.
This time however, the make-up is resulting in a crueler, grittier Depp, as he portrays legendary gangster Whitey Bulger. How tough was the mob boss? So tough, that nobody would dare laugh at his ridiculous name. Here’s the latest trailer for that flick, which charts how the FBI and Bulger decided to control of organised crime in Boston. Things naturally spiraled out of control.
In 1970s South Boston, FBI Agent John Connolly (Joel Edgerton) persuades Irish mobster James “Whitey” Bulger (Johnny Depp) to collaborate with the FBI and eliminate a common enemy: the Italian mob. The drama tells the true story of this unholy alliance, which spiraled out of control, allowing Whitey to evade law enforcement, consolidate power, and become one of the most ruthless and powerful gangsters in Boston history.
Black Mass also stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Corey Stoll, Jesse Plemons and Dakota Johnson. It’s looking like a fantastic slice of pie crime, and it’ll be served up in the US in September.
