Despite the fact that I’m still enjoying the second season of HBO’s True Detective, there’s no denying the fact the show isn’t quite as good now as the absolutely spellbinding first season. And a huge reason for that regression is undoubtedly the loss of auteur Cary Fukunaga, who had helmed all of season one’s episodes. Fukunaga stated that he didn’t return for the second season due to the massive workload, while more recent rumours indicate that he may have had a falling out with True Detective writer/creator Nic Pizzolatto.

But whatever the actual reason may be, HBO’s loss is Netflix’s gain, as Fukunaga signed on to lead the media streaming service’s slate of first original movies, by writing and directing Beasts of No Nation. Based on the Uzodinma Iweala’s 2005 novel of the same name, Beasts is set in an African civil war and follows a young child-soldier forced to serve under Idris Elba’s ruthless Commandant. And it looks f@$%ing incredible! Don’t take my word for it? Then check out this hectic first trailer!

When civil war tears his family apart, a young West African boy is forced to join a unit of mercenary fighters and transform into a child soldier.

Well, damn. That was an intense minute and a half.

Beasts of No Nations will be released on Netflix in all regions on October 16, 2015
