WB checks its luck with a new DUNGEONS & DRAGONS movie

Can you believe that it has been fifteen years since anyone attempted a blockbuster-level Dungeons & Dragons movie? Before Peter Jackson came along and secured the world of Tolkien as the de facto cinematic fantasy experience, everyone expected it to be D&D.

That made a lot of sense: was there any brand more associated with marauding through far-flung locations with a band of wizards, warriors and short people?

That all of course came crashing down with the movie released in 2000 – marred by poor effects, a terrible story and not even enough bad stuff to make it a bad-movie legend, D&D totally failed to live up to the hype.

But you can’t keep a good franchise down and D&D deserves another shot. According to Variety, that is finally happening now that a lawsuit around the matter had been settled:

After months of negotiation, Warner Bros., Hasbro’s Allspark Pictures and Sweetpea Entertainment said they had come to an undisclosed arrangement, ending the 2-year-old lawsuit, and are moving forward with the feature film franchise.

David Leslie Johnson (“The Conjuring 2”) has already written the screenplay set in the “D&D” fantasy world of Forgotten Realms. Hasbro’s Brian Goldner and Stephen Davis, Sweetpea Entertainment’s Courtney Solomon and Allan Zeman, and Roy Lee (“The Lego Movie”) are producing the high-priority project.

I can’t even remember the original movie well-enough to make jokes of it, but it is telling that I can recall Uwe Boll’s awful Dungeon Siege film instead. Fans of D&D will note that there have been several animated movies and the 2000 film even spawned two sequels not worth your time watching. So it’s not exactly been laying dormant.

But D&D deserves to sit alongside Lord of the Rings in terms of what it brings to the fantasy genre. Maybe, next up will be a Warhammer film!

  1. You know what? I kinda enjoyed the last D&D movie. It was a solid B fantasy movie.

Only thing I remember about the 1st besides it being terrible was one of the Wayans being a dedicated comic-relief character. I HATE dedicated comic-relief characters.

I wish they could D&D movie, based on an actual Epic. Like Dragonlance Chronicals / Legends, or the
Drizzt Do’Urden stories. Elminster! There is so much to work with, incredible stories of fantasy…the previous attempts were poor. I mean, a noob sorceress casting a fireball, what is up with that???
