SA’s Weekend Top 10 (31 July to 2 August)

A teeny, tiny action hero has jumped in and rocked the whole chart. But even if you don’t like insects, there are more new things to see…

Given its status if the greatest new Marvel thing EVA!!!, Antman debuts in the number one spot. A critical hit, it’s also raking in the cash. But in context of a Marvel franchise it only ranked 12th for its opening – that’s behind even the Incredible Hulk. Ant-Man_FSE0144_comp_v105.1076_R_COMP

As such Minions drops to the second spot, but it’s unlikely to lose much ground. Unfortunately the film’s overall performance has slowed down and it is unlikely to reach Despicable Me 2‘s earnings.

Also moving down one spot is Pixels, the derided Adam Sandler action movie involving invading video games. But despite its solid performance in SA, generally speaking Pixels is not doing well at all.

Making an unexpected debut at number four is Woman in Gold, a drama about an heiress trying to recover a painting stolen from her family during World War 2. It’s got a great cast, but the real reason for its high debut is probably because there really isn’t much else for older moviegoers to watch. Seriously, it’s like everything out there is aimed at fifteen year olds…

Entourage appears to have its fans, falling only one spot to fifth from its debut last week. This is despite some really dismal reviews.

Jurassic World takes a bit of a tumble, falling three positions to sixth. Audiences are probably tired of it, as the juggernaut has been in the top part of the chart for weeks.

In contrast, the disaster movie San Andreas holds steady at seventh for a second week. This has performed very well, mimicking its surprise hit status elsewhere.

Finally, a non-Afrikaans local movie has charted! Thina Sobabili is a drama about two sisters. set in and around the township of Alexandra and has been popular on the international festival circuit.

Another debut at number nine is Big Game. In it U.S. President Samuel L. Jackson crashes in a Norwegian forest and a bow-brandishing teenager helps him escape from bad people.

Finally, at tenth a HUGE five spot drop for Terminator: Genisys. After all the hope pinned on this rebooting the franchise, it has turned into the series’ biggest flop. I’d say back to the drawing board, but they’ve done that before.

Leaving the charts this week are Inside Out, Magic Mike XXL, Spy and Ted 2.

The top-earner remains Jurassic World, but for some reason the chart update lists Minions as the big draw with R36 million.
