Midweek Movie Mouth Off: the best plot twist of all time

Before we start, I’d like to go ahead and slap a big SPOILER WARNING on the comments section. I won’t be spoiling any plot twists in the article, but enter the discussion at your own risk!

From the earlier days of cinema with Psycho, to cult classics like Fight Club or more recent Oscar contenders like Gone Girl, a good plot twist can completely change a movie, elevating it from merely decent or even pretty good to totally mind-blowing. A well thought out plot twist instantly makes a movie re-watchable and makes sure that you’ll keep thinking about it for weeks to come. Except for most of M. Night Shyamalan’s movies. Once you’re known as “the plot twist guy” it kind of loses its edge.

One of the plot twists that left my jaw on the floor was Shutter Island. As a murder mystery type thriller it kept me guessing, but the masterful ending completely surprised me, taking the story in a direction I never expected it to go. It made me want to watch it again almost instantly, just to look for more clues.

So, in your opinion, which movie has had the most memorable plot twist?

Star Wars beats it every day of the week. The line maybe (incorrectly) overused but at the time it was the biggest plot twist ever!

Nah, I think Usual Suspects tops it and everything else just for how cleverly it does it. It puts every single clue you need to figure out the twist right in your face for nearly the entire movie, and yet still gets you to not see them until that big moment and you’re like ” Oh shit! It was right there! How did I miss that?!”

Love movies like that… When the clues are right there all the time and the twist, when it comes is so great, but upon close thought, you realise you could’ve pieced it together… Which invariably leads to watching the movie again, to see if you were right. 🙂

It was cleverly done and the whole keizer soze thing does stick in your mind but for me the first time I heard the dialog on Bespin it blew me away. Clever as Usual suspects were it did not nearly have such an impact for me.

The entire second half of Predestination was like one huge relentless plot twist that just kept twisting until your mind was completely full of fuck at the end.

Predestination’s story is brilliant, but I actually saw the twist coming from quite early on already. The moment they didn’t show her boyfriend in any of the shots, I knew something was up and my mind put the pieces of the puzzle together.

Yea i saw one coming, and had my suspicions about others, but I completely forgot about the fact that he had complete facial reconstructive surgery at the beginning so when they revealed his identity it knocked me on my arse so hard i had to pause the movie.

The Game. Great acting, great movie and some serious twists towards the end.

Great pick! I’m a Fincher fan boy, so I’m a bit biased, but that movie just doesn’t get the fanfare it deserves.

To this day, one of my favourite Thrillers (and movie – Top 5 for sure) of all time! Michael Douglas at his best.

I know this won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, but The Book of Eli was a cool twist

I actually dug it as well. And once again its one of those twists where the evidence is right there the whole time.
