Sons of Anarchy was a big hit for cable network FX, and ran for seven seasons between 2008 and 2014. The series detailing the trials and tribulations of the small town-based outlaw motorcycle club and their families is the networks’ highest-rated show to date, so it should come as no surprise that there’s often been talk of a spin-off in order to capitalise on its popularity.

Series creator Kurt Sutter has previously floated the idea of a prequel series involving the mythical ‘First Nine’, the founding members of the club, but now Variety have confirmed that a spin-off series is indeed in development and that it’ll instead focus on one of the Sons’ long-time rivals over the course of the show – the Mayans motorcycle club.

Sutter is on board as the executive producer but is currently searching for a dedicated show runner for the spin-off as he’s heavily involved in another upcoming TV series, The Bastard Executioner (watch the trailer here). No other details are available as yet.

SoA mid

I’m going to be honest – I’m really not that excited by this news. While I thoroughly enjoyed the first two seasons of the outlaw bikers’ tale, I can’t really say the same for what followed. The Irish escapades of the third season started the rot (anyone remember Titus Welliver’s Irish accident accent?) and by the time the fourth season rolled around it devolved into a mess of far-fetched plotting and thoroughly unlikable characters with zero redeeming qualities; including the show’s protagonist Jackson “Jax” Teller (Charlie Hunnam), which was unforgivable to me. I gave up watching half way through season 4 when I realised the only character I liked was the new sheriff – and I’m pretty sure that in the context of the show I wasn’t supposed to feel that way.

How do you feel about the spin-off series? Is it something you’d like to see, or are you an unimpressed bastard like me?
