Sad news to start off today, as a horror movie icon is no more. Wes Craven, best known for creating the iconic A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise passed away a short while ago, with his long battle against brain cancer eventually claiming his life. He was 76.
His passing was confirmed through his official Twitter feed:

While he was known primarily for his role in creating the nightmare fuel that was Freddy Krueger and A Nightmare on Elm Street, Craven was also a horror master who helped birth other iconic horror films. The Hills Have Eyes, Scream, The Last House On The Left and The People Under The Stairs are just a few examples of his work that helped shape the genre over several decades.
Craven also directed the first Nightmare on Elm Street movie, as well the ahead-of-its-time meta-sequel Wes Craven’s New Nightmare in 1994.
Sleep well, dream master.
