Would it be wrong if I admitted that I secretly longed for an alien invasion of Earth? No, this isn’t some nihilist “The whole world is rotten and deserves to burn” wish. It’s just that a lifetime of playing video games and reading sci-fi books have prepared me for this! I just know that not only am I going to be the hero of this invasion, but I’m going to look damn cool doing it. And you know what? I can guarantee that there are thousands of (probably also delusional) people out there who feel exactly the same way!

Whether Chloe Grace Moretz’s character in upcoming alien invasion pic The 5th Wave feels that way or not is debatable, as this first trailer for the YA sci-fi adaptation plays things very serious and morose. There’s no Will Smith-esque wisecracking as aliens get punched in the face here. Hell, we really don’t even see any aliens!

What we do see here though seems to be a mish-mash of story ideas from other YA titles, particularly the already derivative The Host. Will the perennially great Moretz actually help to elevate the source material? The potential is certainly there. Check it out below and let us know what you think.

In the The 5th Wave, four waves of increasingly deadly extraterrestrial attacks have left most of Earth decimated. Against a backdrop of fear and distrust, Cassie is on the run, desperately trying to save her younger brother. As she prepares for the inevitable and lethal 5th wave, Cassie teams up with a young man who may become her final hope – if she can only trust him.

The 5th Wave also stars Maika Monroe, Liev Schreiber, Ron Livingston and Nick Robinson. It is scheduled for release on January 15, 2016.
