Growing up, Nicklelodeon had the BEST cartoons for miles around, provided that you were lucky enough to have an M-Net decoder instead of having to wait several years for said toons to air on E-TV.
Kablam!, Hey Arnold and Doug (Before Disney got their hands on it) were some of my favourites, while other people became obsessed with Rugrats for who knows what reason. But the 1990s were a great era for Nickleodeon, one that it has struggled to replicate in recent years. That might all be changing soon however.
Variety reports that the network is currently considering bringing back those warm 1990s memories, as Nickelodeon president of content and development Russell Hicks said ”We are looking at our library to bring back ideas, shows that were loved, in a fresh new way.”
Nicklelodeon has a massive library of shows to choose from: Rocko’s Modern Life, Aaah! Real Monsters and The Adventures of Pete and Pete (FOR I AM ARTIE! THE STRONGEST MAN…IN THE WORLD!).
And that’s something that I’d love to see. Not just for the sake of nostalgia, but because Nicklelodeon has actually had some damn good cartoons as of late. The latest incarnation of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is just brilliant, Sanjay and Craig is fantastic gross-out humour and the Avatar saga was told in two distinct series that spanned almost a decade of content.
There’s some magic there, that I’d love to see funneled into future projects. Nicklelodeon had the best cartoons around for kids in the 1990s. It’s time to revive that for a new generation, instead of banking on cheaply-made sitcoms that’ll drive your brain cells to commit suicide.
