Ron Perlman reveals proposed HELLBOY III story details

Confession time: I’m not the biggest fan of the Hellboy movies. I think the casting of Ron Perlman as the demon who eschews his heritage to become a hero is perfect, and I absolutely love how filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro managed to translate the mythology of Mike Mignola’s comic book to the screen so incredibly well with that amazing visual imagination of his, but as movies I’ve always just found them lacking something. They’re good, don’t get me wrong, I just don’t think they’re great. That being said though, I certainly wouldn’t mind a third trip to that spectacularly imagined world, and neither have fans who have clamoring for Hellboy III for years.

Fans that include Ron Perlman who has seemingly made it his quest in life to get the movie made, but unfortunately his efforts have been mostly in vain thus far as 2008’s Hellboy II: The Golden Army didn’t exactly see it setting the box office alight and Del Toro already has a whole string of projects lined up. That hasn’t stopped him from trying though, and speaking about it to just about anybody that will listen. In the latest instance, it’s Empire, to whom Perlman revealed that the effort is becoming too much now even for him, but that there has actually been some development as he and Del Toro recently met for dinner to discuss proposed story details.

“I really feel as though I’m done with the character. I don’t have a burning desire to put that shit on again. But Guillermo told me what the resolve of the trilogy would look like, in broad strokes, and it’s such an amazingly theatrical, cinematic idea, that I found it essential that we do it. We were designed to be a trilogy, with a beginning, a middle and an end. We’ve only done two-thirds, so I feel that we’re not really done until we finish it.|

So what’s Del Toro’s big idea that got Perlman revitalized again? Well apparently it’s “f–ked up”:

“Holy shit, he’s the beast of the Apocalypse. He has to take down civilisation. He has to. It’s non-negotiable. That’s the foundation for the story, and that’s why I think it would be a shame if we don’t do it.”

Hellboy II ended with Hellboy’s pyromancer girlfriend Liz (Selma Blair) pregnant with twins, and it turns out that her and Hellboy’s offspring have a huge role to play in this final chapter.

“I’ll tell you this. The two twins: one would look like the mum and one would look like the dad. And one of them was going to be completely f–king corrupt, the other one angelic. Which one was which? Only Guillermo would make the f–ked-up-looking one be the angel. So then that adds to the saga.”

That actually sounds pretty cool. Whether we actually get to see it on-screen one day though is still up for debate. Do you still want another Hellboy or do you think they just let this one go now already?
