Superhero movies are all the rage these days. You can barely shake Nick down for spare change without knocking him into a big shared universe franchise wherein all the capes and spandex folk are hanging out.

While the superhero genre has been around for decades, it’s safe to say that such films got a decent jump-start with Blade in 1998, before Marvel finally nailed the proper formula for high stakes franchise action with Iron Man in 2008.

Since then, the genre has proven to be a real money-maker when handled correctly. But for how much longer can this momentum last? According to Stephen Spielberg, superheroes will fade one day much like western films did.

But in a response to that comment, Captain America himself had a few words to share. Speaking to Collider, Chris Evans chatted about how the recent advances in technology were helping to drive spandex films forward:

I certainly think that given the fact that technology has finally advanced, they’re always going to be looking for other films to match their technological accomplishments. Any film that can incorporate these larger-than-life characters and fantastical locations and plots, the technology wants to prove they can do it so whether it’s superhero film or fantasy in general, that’s going to surge for a while.

As for how we define what makes a superhero movie, that’s where the real challenge will lie in the future:

In terms of superhero in general, existing properties that we know and love, it’s going to be a matter of the tone they strike. You could look at Jason Bourne as a superhero. You could take any superhero movie and if you ground it enough, if you make it real enough—that’s what I think [Captain America: The Winter Soldier directors Joe and Anthony Russo] do really well. Certain superhero movies feel like “superhero movies.”

Russo movies almost feel like human stories with a little bit of superhero sprinkled in. So you might get exhausted of the larger-than-life powers I suppose, but as long as the filmmakers keep on reinventing the flavor and the approach and the tone, audiences are going to still go.

What you have to remember, is that movies are a product of their respective eras, and very easily influenced by outside factors. Westerns are a perfect example of this, as the 1960s and the Vietnam War helped contribute to the decline of cowboy flicks.

While the bubble may eventually burst, it probably won’t be anytime soon, as the genre is thriving with a boatload of new releases on the way that includes Captain America: Civil War and more Avengers: The Infinity War.
