I don’t know about you guys, but I need a doctor. No, not a medical doctor (that suspicious rash will just have to wait), but the Doctor. The greatest Time Lord to every grace our TV screens in long-running much beloved sci-fi show Doctor Who. The show’s 8th season – which introduced us to the latest incarnation of the regenerating alien in Peter Capaldi – wrapped up in last year’s Christmas special, which saw Capaldi’s Doctor and Jenna Coleman’s impossibly companion Clara Oswald reuniting after having a falling out.

There’s a much bigger reunion with arguably the most important woman in the Doctor’s life that has yet to happen though, but it looks like we won’t to have to wait too long for it as Alex Kingston’s time traveling River Song will be returning for the upcoming Doctor Who Christmas special! Spoilers, sweetie!

The BBC made the announcement last week when they revealed that the first day of filming on the special, scripted by lead writer and showrunner Steven Moffat, had commenced. Kingston had this to say about the return of her character, who was last seen saying goodbye to the previous incarnation of the Doctor two years ago as the psychic projection of her consciousness.

“To be honest, I did not know whether River would ever return to the show, but here she is, back with the Doctor for the Christmas special. Steven Moffat is on glittering form, giving us an episode filled with humour and surprise guest castings. I met Peter for the first time at Monday’s read through, we had a laugh, and I am now excited and ready to start filming with him and the Doctor Who team. Christmas in September? Why not!”

Of course while this will be the first time that Capaldi’s Doctor meets River, this won’t be the first time that she meets him as he (still played by David Tennant in season 4) first met her at her death and has been moving backwards through her timeline, subsequently falling in love with her as he got older older and changed faces, but continuously meeting younger versions of her who knew him less and less. Or something. It’s complicated, okay. And will probably get even more complicated before things are done, as Moffat explains:

“Another Christmas, another special for Doctor Who – and what could be more special than the return of Alex Kingston as Professor River Song? The last time the Doctor saw her she was a ghost. The first time he met her, she died. So how can he be seeing her again? As ever, with the most complicated relationship in the universe, it’s a matter of time…”

And before all the paradoxical logistics of two time travelers falling in love start doing your head in, have a look at the newly released teaser trailer for the upcoming ninth season of the show. It’s only 20 seconds long, but there are a few great shots in there. Also, apparently somebody is farming hands now. Of course.

The the ninth season is scheduled to start on BBC in just a less than two weeks on September 19, while the 2015 Doctor Who Christmas Special will air on BBC on Christmas day (duh).
